Reinhart Takes First Place In Pack 270’s Pinewood Derby

Cub Scout Pack 270 held its annual Pinewood Derby competition, after a week’s snow delay, on Monday, January 31. The event ended just before another large storm hit Monday night into Tuesday morning.

“The snow was not going to prevent Pack 270 from running our annual Pinewood Derby. We had an impressive turnout this year, with 62 cars competing for top honors,” said Cubmaster John Boccuzzi.

“Jackson Reinhart from Den 1 took the overall first place with the fastest time of the evening. Brett Pierce, also from Den 1, was on his heels with second, and third place overall was Jack Mahar from Den 6,” Mr Boccuzzi added.

The difference in times between the top three was less than one-100th of a second. The fastest Den for the second year in a row was Den 1.

The Most Cub Scout Participation Award went to Ethan Gardiner from Den 5 and the Most Creative Car Award went to Owen Reinhart from Den 2.

Scouts are all provided with identical blocks of wood and wheels, and it is then up to them to carve out the shape, and paint and decorate their cars for the derby. Cars had to be within 2¾ by 7 inches, and weigh no more than 5 ounces. Design and scheme are completely up to each Scout.

“Pack 270 truly lived up to the Cub Scout Motto ‘Do Your Best.’ Congratulations to everyone that competed,” said Mr Boccuzzi.

Pack 270 is based at Middle Gate School, and recruited 29 new Cub Scouts this year for a total of 62 active Cub Scouts in nine dens. The pack’s website is www.pack270.org.
