An AWE-some Lenten Experience At Newtown Congregational Church

To celebrate Lent Newtown Congregational Church is offering AWE (alternative worship experience) services each Wednesday evening until April 13.

The service involves various members of the congregation participating in dramatic interpretations of individuals who “encountered Jesus.” Services begin at 7 pm at the congregational church, 14 West Street.

“It’s certainly very different from ‘the usual’ church service, and it is a major part of the Vitality Project that NCC is involved in,” said NCC and AWE Ministry member Dianna Pategas. “Our church is one of six selected out of 250 Congregational churches in Connecticut to participate in innovative programs designed to welcome the community into our doors.”

Prior to each Wednesday evening service, the community is also invited to join NCC members for a soup and bread dinner. Dinner begins at 6.

“The worship experiences … are designed to bring our awareness deeper into our faith,” said Ms Pategas. “This series has been assembled to help us more fully prepare ourselves for and lead us into Holy Week.”

AWE Lenten offerings began with an Ash Wednesday service on March 9, and will continue March 16, 23 and 30, and April 6 and 13. All are welcome.

Holy Week Schedule

NCC has also announced its schedule of special services for Holy Week, which will begin with its regular 10 am service on Sunday, April 17.

A family-oriented worship service is planned for Thursday, April 21, at 7 pm. Children will be invited to actively participate in the event.

“Reflections on The Last Seven Words of Christ” will be offered at noon on April 22, Good Friday.

Easter Sunday on April 24 will begin with an outdoor sunrise service atop Castle Hill at 6:30 am. (Sunrise this year, for those who would like to witness it before the service, will be at 6:03.) A continental breakfast will follow at the church.

An indoor service will also be offered that morning, at 10 am.
