Hawk Gridders Crush Rebels 41-14
After a tough, defensive-minded, scoreless opening quarter of play, Newtown High School’s football team showed how explosive its offense can be during New Fairfield’s visit to Blue & Gold Stadium on November 14. The Nighthawks, on Senior Night – in fact – poured it on with five touchdowns before halftime en route to a 41-14 triumph. Newtown improved to 10-0 and New Fairfield fell to 6-4.
Quarterback Jacob Burden hit Troy Frangione for a 33-yard score with 8:54 to go before the half, and the flood gates were open. Newtown made the Rebels pay for a fake punt attempt on its own side of the field. A turnover on downs gave the Hawks the ball at New Fairfield’s 29 yard line. Two plays later, Michael Doyle caught a 27-yard TD pass and it was 14-0 with 6:17 to play in the quarter.
Julian Dunn caught the first of his two touchdowns, from seven yards out, with 3:46 to go. Ethan Carpenter returned a punt 48 yards for a score with 2:16 left, and Dunn returned an interception 41 yards to the end zone with 1:35 left in the half.
Up next for Newtown is the November 20 South-West Conference championship game. The Hawks will take on Brookfield, at neutral site Bunnell High in Stratford, at 7 pm. Read more about the win over New Fairfield in the November 21 print edition of The Bee.
