Newtown's Relay for Life — which for the unfamiliar, is not a sporting event — is taking place today, Saturday, June 13, at Newtown High School’s Blue & Gold Stadium.

After a decade of success hosting overnight Relays that have raised more than $2.5 million, local volunteers switched gears for 2015, taking advantage of the opportunity to host a more eclipsed event .that will begin at 3 pm and end at midnight

Newtown’s Relay For Life will recognize and celebrate all local cancer survivors and caregivers who give time, love, and support to their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers facing cancer. Recording artist Gregori Lukas is making his return to entertain attendees, along with a number of young local performers.

There will be games and music mixed with tributes and other more reverent activities. Admission to the Relay is free, and the entire community is invited.

For all the details, visit the local event website, relayforlife.org/newtownct, or follow event happenings on Facebook at facebook.com/newtownrelayforlife.@RFLNewtown, or Twitter at

Participants and visitors are urged to post any cellphone pictures from tthe Relay on Twitter at #Relay4Newtown.

Local teams hosting full fundraising events for Relay For Life — in other words, where 100 percent of any money collected is donated — are invited to contact The Newtown Bee for free help with publicity.
