Mozelle Lacy Robertson

Quintessential Southern Gentlewoman

Mozelle Lacy Robertson, 93, of the Sandy Hook section of Newtown, died peacefully January 6 at home surrounded by her family and close friends. Mrs Robertson was born in Toccoa, Ga., on February 8, 1914, and was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. She was predeceased by her childhood sweetheart and loving husband, Towns Bozeman Robertson.

Mrs Robertson is survived by her daughter, Emily Cassidy and her husband, John; four grandchildren, Catherine Cassidy, Shannon Cassidy, Stacy O’Boyle and her husband, Jay, and Sean Cassidy and his wife, Virna; and three great-grandchildren, Katie and Jack O’Boyle, and Tessa Mae Cassidy.

She worked as a hairdresser for 33 years and retired at age 65 to take care of her ailing husband. After his passing, she continued to live in Georgia for another ten years, during which she was very active in her church women’s group with many of her friends. She also had a very green thumb and loved to tend to the many flowers and plants she so enjoyed. She traveled to Hawaii at age 75 and six years later at the age of 81, took a wonderful trip to China with her dear friend Elizabeth Pugh.

In 1996, she moved to Sandy Hook to be closer to her immediate family. She maintained her own home at Walnut Tree Village for nine years, where she made new friends, became active in Newtown Congregational Church, often working in the clothing recycling, and she continued with her hobby of gardening by lovingly tending to her beautiful backyard garden. She entertained several visits from close family members and longtime friends from Georgia and kept in constant touch with many of her friends from the South. Last year her childhood friend of 84 years, Vera Loftin, visited for a week. The two spent a wonderful week together, catching up on old times and many fond memories from their past.

In 2005, when she could no longer be on her own, she moved in with her daughter, Emily, and son-in-law, John, also of Sandy Hook. Mrs Robertson was the quintessential “Southern Lady” and a true Georgia Peach. She will be lovingly missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all of the friends and neighbors and members of her church who treated her so kindly. A special appreciation goes to the Danbury Hospice personnel who provided the most wonderful, gentle and professional care to Mrs Robertson, to John and Emily and their entire family, including Lucy.

Calling hours were scheduled for Thursday, January 10, from 3 to 7 pm, in Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown. A memorial service will take place during the calling hours. She will be interred next to her husband, Towns Bozeman Robertson, following a funeral in Corinth Christian Church in Youth, Ga. She will lie in state on Monday evening, January 14, from 6 to 8 pm, in Stewart Funeral Home in Loganville, Ga., and on Tuesday afternoon, January 15, from 1:30 to 2 pm, in Corinth Christian Church, with the funeral service to begin at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, 405 Main Street, Danbury CT 06810.
