It doesn’t seem like the nicest way to come back from a long layoff, heading right into the fray against some of the toughest teams in the South-West Conference – like Masuk (10-0), New Milford (7-2) and Pomperaug.

But that’s what the Nighthawks had to do on Monday and they suffered for it. After starting the season a couple weeks ago with two wins and one loss, the ‘Hawks came back on Monday – at home – and got swept.

With losses to Masuk, New Milford, and Pomperaug the girls saw their record dip to 2-4.

But if there is one thing the rebuilding ‘Hawks knew, it was that they would take their lumps in the 2000 season. After losing a large chunk of their two-time SWC champion squad to graduation, the ‘Hawks – despite an influx a nice, young talent – were going to have a tough go of it.

Even so, Newtown did find some success in familiar places on Monday. Outstanding sprinter Janelle Tracy took both the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.9 and 26.6, respectively, and also anchored the 4x100 meter relay team which took first at 51.8.

The ‘Hawks have always had strength in the relays and with another first-place finish in the 4x400 relay, it shows.

Also, Tristan Blanchard took first in the discus with a toss of 90-3, over eight feet better than her nearest competitor. Allison Frobey was second in the 400 meters at 1:03.5 and Erin Kostecki was fifth in the 1,600-meter (6:01) and 3,200-meter (13:06) races. Caitlin Elf finished second in the long jump at 14-101/2 while Cara DelVecchio was third in the triple jump at 28-71/2 . Elf and Frobey finished tied for fourth in the high jump at 4-4.

The ‘Hawks traveled to Bunnell on Thursday for a quad-meet with Bunnell, Notre Dame and Immaculate and then, next Monday, will travel to Brookfield for a quad-meet with Brookfield, Lauralton Hall and Weston.

The results of Monday’s meet:

New Milford 78, Newtown 63

Pomperaug 80, Newtown 61

Masuk 87, Newtown 54
