Orienteering Events This Month
Western Connecticut Orienteering Club has public orienteering events scheduled this month in Ansonia and Easton.
The first event will be on Saturday, September 17, at Ansonia Nature Center, Deerfield Road, Ansonia. Registration and starts will be ongoing from 10 am to noon.
The courses for Ansonia will be set by Jim Henderson of Coventry. The next event will be on Sunday, September 25, at Trout Brook Valley, Bradley Road in Easton. Registration and starts will also run from 10 am until noon. Neil Bostrom of Norwalk will be setting up the event.
For either event, participants will use an orienteering map and a compass to find their way across the terrain seeking orange and white flags at various land features. The features are marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course.
In orienteering as a competition, the winner punches all the flags in the shortest time. All levels of all standard courses, from beginner to expert, will be available.
Instruction and training will be available for beginners.
Fee is $6 per person, and compasses are available.
