Newtown Cultural Arts Commission has three days of events planned for its 7th Annual Newtown Arts Festival weekend, September 14-16 at Fairfield Hills.

The signature art for this year's festival will feature an interpretation of Virginia Zimmerman's "Welcome To Newtown." Ms Zimmerman painted the mural on the southern railroad support on Church Hill Road during the spring months of 2017.

She has created the 2018 festival logo based on that work. T-shirts and posters sold at the arts festival will feature the new logo.

Festival weekend events will again take place on the field at the corner of Keating Farms Avenue and Beers Boulevard.

The 2018 Newtown Arts Festival will open with a concert by Lords of 52nd Street, Legends of the Billy Joel Band, on Friday, September 15.

The band has reportedly sold more than 150 million records, and continues to perform the sound that helped establish Billy Joel's career.

Newtown resident Dylan Cortese, a vocalist, pianist and songwriter, will perform that evening's opening set.

A tent will be set up for the stage and VIP seating; lawn seating will also be available for the show, which will begin at 6 pm.

VIP seats are $35 and lawn seats are $25.

The two-day outdoor festival will be Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16, from 11 am to 5 pm. Ongoing performances, workshops, artisans, food trucks, and a wine and beer garden will all be offered.

New this year is "The Art of Science," which will include making musical instruments from Google Science, From Fractions to Art, and creating pictures through math.

"The Art of Farming," another new tent, will have maple syrup to sample, information on keeping on backyard chickens, bee husbandry, and information on The Victory Garden at Fairfield Hills.

Coming back are the dance tent, with free performances, demonstrations of watercolor by Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) members artists, and the opportunity to paint in acrylics. The Make-And-Take Tent will also return, with knitting, tatting, Bottles of Hope, and native crafts from recent refuges.

Daytime festival entertainment will include performances by Tales of Joy and Cheap Thrill on Saturday. The NHS Singers and NHS Marching Band will continue their tradition of opening the field on Sunday at 11 am.

Additional Sunday performances scheduled as of this week include Unclaimed Baggage and Gorja.

All workshops and performances are included with festival admission, which remains $5 for adults, and $3 for ages 5-12. Children age 4 and under will be admitted without charge.

"An Evening of the Arts" will be on the stage Saturday, September 15.

Beginning at 6 pm, the evening's program will include performances by New England New Music Ensemble, DMC Westfield Winds, Hat City Flutes, Harmony on The Sound Chorus, and students from Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet.

A play reading by members of Town Players of Newtown and poetry readings will also be part of "An Evening of the Arts."

Acts are subject to change.

Tickets are $20 for adults, and $5 ages 5-14.
