Valentines For Troops 2011

To the Editor:

This January will mark the sixth year that Newtown students will be sending cards and letters to our military serving overseas. What began as a simple second grade letter writing exercise in 2006 has grown to become a community outreach.

This year, all our elementary schools to include St Rose of Lima will be writing letters. Reed Intermediate students, seventh and eighth grade Sunday school classes and scout troops, as well as high school age residents, are writing letters of cheer to our troops. In addition, many adults are participating in showing support for our troops.

We have many supporters and donations this year, including our local dentists with toothbrushes; Charter Communications with DVDs; Unilever with Dove beauty bars; and Duracell with batteries.

Our First Selectman Pat Llodra graciously showed her support appearing on a Charter 21 Local Edition segment with Donna Randle. This show will air again on Sunday, January 2, at 4 pm, and Tuesday, January 4, at 4 pm.

Roxbury and Danbury groups will also be joining in this year’s outreach.

Letter writing begins the first week of January. If you or your organization would like to participate in sending a note of cheer and/ or perhaps a small “care package” to our military men and women, please contact Jennifer Peterson at jdmp7896@charter.net or Donna Randle at ndrandle@charter.net or call 203-364-9772.

On behalf of the entire Valentines For Troops Team, we wish everyone a happy, healthy, fruitful New Year!
