Boy Scouts Celebrate Court Of Honor

A Court of Honor was held for Troop 270 of Newtown at Newtown Meeting House on December 15.

At that time a new flag was dedicated to the troop by Newtown Congregational Churchâs Senior Pastor, the Reverend Matthew Crebbins, and NCC board member Dick Hubert. The church is the new sponsor and home for Troop 270.

Senior Patrol Leader Rob Russo and Chris Erikson, assistant patrol leader, led the ceremony with the announcement of rank advancements, presentation of merit badges, sashes, neckerchiefs, and special awards. Advancements were Scout: Nick Lombardo, Robert Lombardo, and Mitchell Weiman; Tenderfoot: Henry Korth, Adam Manes, Clint Stergue, Nick Mitsos, and Mitchell Weimen; Second Class: Chris Lafky and Carl Whippie; First Class: Daniel Ansari and Michael Vitti; Star: Sam Boland and Brandon Unger; and Life: Chris Erikson.

Also Brandon Capaldo received the World Conservation Award. New members Alan De Pinto, Jeff DePinto and Maksymilian Koziol were welcomed into the troop.

Troop 270 meets weekly on Wednesday evenings at Newtown Congregational Church.

Not approving a development that has "checked" all the boxes because the NIMBY mob doesn't like it is wrong.

The town historically has strong collaboration with developers, but the primary obstacle arises from community opposition exerting undue influence on the zoning department. This "NIMBY" pressure often leads to project rejections that exceed the department's actual jurisdiction or authority. Consequently, developers face a limited set of options: either engage in expensive legal battles or leverage the Connecticut Affordable Housing Land Use Appeals Procedure (CGS § 8-30g) as a recourse.

You are correct, Bruce. I know how hard these plans are to put together, but I still believe that we can have more definitive and measurable goals. I know there are a number of units coming online, and the community truly needs them. If only we can move the development of affordable housing to more of a partnership between the community and the developers than the adversarial tug-of-war it seems to be now, that would be good progress.
