Start The New Year With A Walk On The Wild Side

SOUTHBURY –– On Monday, January 3, from 9 to 11 am, Bent of the River Audubon Center Education Director Ellen Turner will guide a leisurely paced natural history walk to view the nature preserve in all of its winter glory.

Participants will walk a path along the Pomperaug River and follow trails that lead to the historic barn as well as to the expansive fields beyond the barn. Birds and animals that call the Bent home at this time of year may be seen and Ms Turner will weave a natural history storyline around sights and sounds of the natural world.

If there is fresh snow, animal tracks may be plentiful, and walkers will learn to identify which animals are out and about. They may also learn to identify a few newcomers to the Bent.

Bent of the River, a 660-acre wildlife sanctuary, is owned and managed by the National Audubon Society. It is home to many species of birds, mammals, butterflies, and amphibians, as well as a rich diversity of tree and plant life.  The grounds and more than 15 miles of trails are open to visitors seven days a week during daylight hours.

Bent of the River Audubon Center is located on East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, about a half mile from Connecticut Route 172 off of I-84 Exit 14. For more information, call 264-5098.
