Bits & PiecesÂ
Bits & Pieces
By Kim J. Harmon
Â
I have an uneasy feeling that 2005 might be a down year for Newtown sports. Come on, it must be time for fate to even things out, right?
With the Newtown Babe Ruth 10-year-old All Stars reaching the Cal Ripken World Series, the Newtown High School boysâ and girlsâ soccer teams winning CIAC Class LL state championships; three athletes committing to major Division I programs; and two all-time basketball scoring records being broken it seems as if the community has been blessed with remarkable success over the last year.
Can it continue?
I sure hope so because 2004 was a lot of fun and I would love to cover it all over again.

Is it just me, or have the New York Yankees â from the groundskeeper right up to George Steinbrenner â completely lost their minds?
Not only are they are absolutely obsessed with acquiring a 41-year-old pitcher and giving him a two- or three-year contract extension (at about $16 million per, no less) they are, at the same time, looking to acquire 26-year-old Carlos Beltran (who only hit .268 last year) and giving him $16-$20 million a year.
And besides that, they are desperate to unload Javier Vazquez, who was 14-10 with a 4.91 earned run average last year (numbers which, if he were a free agent from Montreal or Florida, would be see Vazquez offered more than $10 million per year by the Yankees).
And with all this mess the team payroll could exceed $250 million in 2005 â which, as we all know, is no guarantee the Yankees will even make it to the World Series.
Utter madness.
