Falbo MVP As Newtown Grapplers Place Second In Lowell Tourney
Newtown High School’s wrestling team, led by 182-pound weight class champion Anthony Falbo, finished second among 69 teams in the Lowell Holiday Tournament, in Lowell, Mass, on December 28 and 29.
Chelmsford was first with 211.5 points; Newtown was runner-up with 181 to narrowly edge third-place Timberline, which scored 176, and Mt Anthony was fourth with 165 points.
Falbo won all six of his bouts en route to winning tourney MVP honors. Newtown had a trio of second-place finishers as Joe Accousti won four of five competitions in the 170-pound division, Andy Hubina won five of six at 195, and Tom Long came out on top in four of five competitions at 220. Newtown’s Ed Lovely won six of seven bouts and placed third at 145, and Aaron Occhipinti was victorious in four of six matches to place fourth at 126.
In Newtown’s previous match, a dual meet at Simsbury, on December 22, the Nighthawks won 40-28. Results are as follows: 106: Nikolas Accousti won via pin in 0:24. 113: Justin Bogdanoff earned a 13-5 major decision. 120: Both teams forfeited. 126: Occhipinti won via pin in 0:58. 132: Newtown lost by forfeit. 138: Owen Walsh lost an 11-3 major decision. 145: Lovely lost a 6-1 decision. 152: David Bergquist was pinned in 0:45. 160: Peter Mihok lost a 6-1 decision. 170: Joe Accousti won via pin in 3:20. 195: Hubina won via pin in 1:26. 220: Newtown lost by forfeit. 285: Long won via pin in 1:25.
The Nighthawks will compete in the Trumbull Duals on Saturday, January 2. The next home competition is set for Wednesday, January 6, when Stratford visits Newtown High at 7 pm.
