Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team, on December 28, suffered its second straight overtime loss — a 67-64 double OT setback to visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport in the Wounded Warrior Tournament semifinal game.

“The difference is an extra rebound, or an extra free throw, or one less turnover and we are 2-1 and not 0-3. But hopefully these close OT games will translate to better days ahead,” said Newtown Coach Tim Tallcouch, whose team also dropped a 70-64 overtime decision to visiting Stamford, on December 23.

Newtown, fueled by a 21-point second quarter, led Kolbe 29-24 at halftime. The game was knotted at 56 apiece after regulation and even at 61-all as it went into a second extra session.

Dillon Palumbo led the Nighthawks with 18 points; Joe Duero and Sam Duffy had 16 each; and Tom Cotton added six. Duero hit four of the team’s seven 3-pointers; and Palumbo was 10 of 14 at the foul line as the Hawks sank 21 of 30 free throws overall.

Duff had a team-high 21 rebounds and two steals; Palumbo contributed six assists and a trio of steals; Cotton had five assists; and Duero added four assists.

The Nighthawks are scheduled to take on Staples of Westport in the tourney consolation game on Wednesday, December 30, beginning at 4 pm.

Dillon Palumbo dribbles the ball during Newtown's overtime loss to Stamford, on December 23. The Nighthawks also suffered an overtime setback to Kolbe Cathedral, on December 28.
