UPCOMING WINTER EXHIBITIONS AT MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM –

TG/jl set 12-29 #614097

MILWAUKEE, WIS. — The Milwaukee Art Museum will present the works of Mark Lombardi from January 14 to April 10

This retrospective consists of 25 of Lombardi’s works, beginning with a piece from 1984 and then moving to the period 1994 through 2000; most of them are from the last three years of the artist’s life. Lombardi has been compared to Robert Smithson and Gordon Matta-Clark in terms of the complexity of his work and the significant influence he has had.

Lombardi creates drawings that are visual narratives of the way money flows in the postimperial, transnational economy: from corporations to political organizations, from individuals to various ad hoc groups, most of them acting outside national boundaries — and often outside the law. Using graphite and red pencil, and information culled from newspaper accounts, television and other sources in the public domain, Lombardi developed a new type of history painting that maps the economic underpinnings of the global society.

The Milwaukee Art Museum will also present “Tea Table, Coffee Table” February 25–June 12. The tea table and the coffee table were introduced to America approximately 200 years apart. The tea table, with a tilt-top, central pedestal and three legs, was first made in America by immigrant British craftsmen in the 1720s. The coffee table, invented in the 1920s, was dis-tinguished by its low, informal height and expansive surface. It became such an important part of the midcentury American living room that it led to the creation of a new type of literature, the coffee table book. This exhibition compares the parallel developments of these familiar furniture forms, and includes tea and coffee services from each period as well as prime examples of the tables themselves.

From March 18 to June 19, the museum will exhibit “Currents 32: Gregor Schneider.” German artist Gregor Schneider uses the images and materials of domestic architecture to express ideas of life, death and desire. Schneider is best known for his monumental project “Dead House ur,” begun in the mid-1980s when the artist was still in his teens. Over the course of several years, Schneider systematically rebuilt, on a smaller scale, rooms from his actual apartment in the German city of Rheydt. In this and other projects, Schneider taps into the symbolic and psychological potential of home.

Somewhat less well known is Schneider’s work in other media. This exhibition features his work in sculpture, photography and video, which together provide a complete inventory of the artist’s themes, materials, media and approaches.

The Milwaukee Museum of Art is at 700 North Art Museum Drive. For information, 414-224-3200 or mam.org.
