LONDON GALLERY TO SHOW AT ADELSON w/2 cuts
ss/lsb set 12-28
NEW YORK CITY â âMaster Drawings,â an assemblage of works on paper from both European and American artists dating from Old Masters drawings to those made in the Twentieth Century, will be on view January 24âFebruary 11 at Adelson Galleries, presented by Flavia Ormond Fine Arts Limited. This exhibition will mark the dealerâs 12th show at Adelson Galleries.
Included will be works by Michelangelo Anselmi, George Wesley Bellows, Louis Leopold Boilly, Marie-Desire Bourgoin, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Carlo Innocenzo Carlone, Jan de Braij, Theodore Gericault, Egbert Van Heem-skerck, George Inness, Augustus John, Adolph von Menzel, Thomas Moran, Francesco Paolo Michetti, Oskar Pletsch, Hubert Robert, John Singer Sargent, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, Henry Tonks, Giorgio Vasari, Francois-Andre Vincent, Anthonie Waterloo and James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
Among the highlights is âA Seated Female Allegory of Military Virtue by Giorgio Vasari (1511â1574), a pen and brown ink and brown wash drawing that appears over another drawing in black chalk on blue paper squared in black chalk. A rapid sketch of the torso of a seated figure in pen and brown ink appears on the verso. This work is a new addition to the corpus of drawings by Vasari.
Also featured will be âMoonlit Wooded Landscapeâ by Anthonie Waterloo (1609â1690), an oiled black chalk and watercolor work drawn on the back of a sheet of domestic accounts. Although this Dutch artist was primarily a draughtsman and an etcher, his large body of drawings includes topographical views, panoramic views and forest interiors. This work, however, belongs to his small but remarkable group of landscape drawings executed in a special âmixed mediaâ technique of chalk, watercolor, body color and, in some cases, also charcoal soaked in linseed oil. The resulting effect is similar to a small, atmospheric painting.
A rare group of early drawings by John Singer Sargent (1856â1925) is included, among them âNude Boy Seen From Behind,â drawn in pencil between 1874 and 1878, when Sargent moved to Paris with his parents to study with Carolus-Duran. After undergoing a rigorous examination, Sargent was also accepted during this time as a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, which he was eager to attend because Carolus-Duran did not initially emphasize drawing.
âBelgian Women,â circa 1920, is by the American artist George Wesley Bellows (1882â1925), who was often linked with âThe Eightâ and was a follower of Robert Henri. He always had a talent for figural work and âBelgian Womenâ is a bold charcoal drawing on paper depicting three women in various styles of dress that reflects the artistâs range in media and subject.
During this exhibition, Adelson Galleries will be open to the public MondayâFriday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday by appointment. The galleries are in The Mark Hotel, 25 East 77th Street, third floor, New York City. For information, 212-439-6800 or www.AdelsonGalleries.com.
