Hockey Team Skates To 13-0 Win
The Newtown-New Fairfield co-op hockey team opened the season, and the Michael Campbell coaching era, with a 13-0 win over the Housatonic-Northwestern-Torrington-Wolcott Tech team at Danbury Ice Arena on December 18.
Luca Maura scored four times, including a natural hat-trick (three consecutive goals) to begin the game as the Nighthawks took a 3-0 lead into the second period and blew the game wide open with five more tallies in the middle stanza.
Colby Cheneski scored three times and had an assist hat-trick of sorts for a six-point night. Vince Schauchat and Pat Moody both scored twice and Moody added a pair of assists for a four-point effort. Jack Meade and Quinn Harris also lit the lamp; Harris had two assists and Meade had an assist. Jordan Balla recorded two assists.
Carter Bisson started in goal and made ten saves through the first and much of the second period, and Kaylee Awrachow saw her first varsity action with about six minutes left in the second period; she finished with four saves for the combined shutout
The Hawks went to Northford and fell 5-2 to Daniel Hand of Madison on December 20. Dylan Schmidt scored and Cheneski had a goal and an assist.
Newtown-New Fairfield ventured back to Northford to take on Branford in a December 23 matchup and fell 11-0.
