Absolute Auction Center Kicks Off 2005 With A Bang On January 8

PLEASANT VALLEY, N.Y. — Absolute Auctions & Realty will kickoff the 2005 season on January 8 with an estate auction featuring Part Two of the John K. Hansegger Collection of Paintings. The 5 pm auction, at Absolute Auction Center, 45 South Avenue, will also include the usual grouping of furniture, rugs and collectibles assembled from various sources including the Clara C. Maione estate, Lagrange, Dutchess County, N.Y.

In the collection of 325 works are traditional landscapes, portraits, Surrealist works, Cubist works, Abstracts, Impressionist works and, of course, a large selection of his famous rooster paintings.

The highlight of the regular auction section is a Federal period mahogany and gilt mirror with curved leaf and floral side drapes and a large Phoenix bird crest.

Other interesting lots include a Tiffany Studios’ desk box, “The Improved Celestina” music box with rolls, carnival glass, bowls signed Northwood, a set of Holmes and Edwards’ “Spring Garden,” 1949 silver plated flatware, 100 silver dollars, Syracuse’s “Harmony” china, nine early silhouettes, an English pewter trencher, a lighthouse shaped teapot, an amphora table lamp and 150 lots of collectible straight razors.

Furniture featured includes an Eighteenth Century tiger maple spider leg candlestand, an oak sideboard with china closet ends, an Art Nouveau oak hall bench with hat rack, a 1947 Charak mahogany console cabinet, a mahogany cased Krakauer spinet piano, sets of oak T-back and spindle back chairs, a tramp art oak stand, an oak tall chest with mirror, high style Art Deco carved chairs and mahogany stands, a 1920s mahogany breakfront with carved eagle crest and fine large entertainment cabinets built with old temple doors from India.

slug: Lecture Series to Be Held at STAATSBURGH State Historic Site

STAATSBURGH, N.Y. — The Friends of Mills Mansion will host a champagne lecture series, “Antiquing with Mrs Mills: Country House Treasures of the Gilded Age,” on Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm in January and February at Staatsburgh State Historic Site, formerly Mills Mansion.

The country house of Ogden and Ruth Livingston Mills, a Beaux-Arts mansion on the Hudson River, was enlarged and renovated by the firm of McKim, Mead and White in 1895. Decorated by Stanford White and Allard et Fils of Paris, the house is furnished in Eighteenth Century French styles.

Helen Constantino Fioratti will speak on January 16. Fioratti, proprietor of L’Anti-quaire & the Connoisseur Inc in New York City, will talk about antiques favored by the wealthy during the gilded age.

On January 23, Deborah Lee Trupin will discuss the challenges in conserving antique textiles, using Staatsburgh as a case study. Trupin has been the textile conservator for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s Bureau of Historic Sites for nearly 20 years.

Winding up the series on February 6, David Bayne will speak about various approaches to conserving Eighteenth Century French furniture, with illustrations from the Millses’ collection. Bayne is the furniture conservator for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s Bureau of Historic Sites.
