ROBERT MILLER GALLERY PRESENTS AL HELD: PUBLIC PROJECTS

tg/lsb set 12/27 #614197

NEW YORK CITY — Robert Miller Gallery announces an exhibition of Al Held’s watercolors and renderings, January 11–15, based on three recent public commissions: the 51st Street and Lexington Avenue Subway Station in New York City, the Main Jacksonville Public Library in Florida, and the US District Courthouse in Orlando, Fla.

For the subway project, the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s Art for Transit committee commissioned Held to install a permanent mosaic in the subway station beneath the Citicorp’s headquarters allowing millions of commuters access to this public work of art each year.

Held has envisioned six splendid stained glass windows for the courthouse in Orlando, Fla., and the four works at the new Jacksonville Library will be in Held’s chief media for large scale works, acrylic on canvas.

These works are an opportunity and vehicle for Held to create images in the scale he often envisions and will provide the public with an opportunity to become involved and fully engrossed with the images.

The exhibition will open with a reception for the artist on Tuesday, January 11, from 6 to 8 pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm. For information, 212-366-4774 or www,RobertMiller Gallery.com.

slug: Preservation Society Of Newport County Plans Winter Lecture Series

#614228

TG

NEWPORT, R.I. — The Preservation Society of Newport County will present a series of lectures over the winter months focusing on some of its upcoming preservation challenges, and the art of horticulture; the schedule, however, is subject to change.

On Thursday, January 20, at 11 am, John R. Tschirch, architectural historian, and Holly Collins Research Fellow, will present “Chateau-sur-Mer Revisited: A Social and Architectural History.” Chateau-sur-Mer is one of the great Victorian houses of America and this lecture will share recent research on the Wetmore family letters and the architectural evolution of Chateau-sur-Mer, which was continually redecorated by the family between the 1850s and 1930s.

On Thursday, February 3 at 11 am, James Donahue, horticulturist, will present “Planning for the Future of Green Animals.” Join Donahue as he explains the process of creating a renovation master plan that is both sensitive to the Green Animals Topiary Garden’s past and invigorating for its future. Among the many topics to be presented are topiary preservation, proper boxwood culture, seasonal planting rotations and some new ideas for garden development.

Additionally, on Thursday, March 3, James Donahue will present a special behind the scenes look at “The Preservation Society of Newport County’s New England Spring Flower Show” exhibit. Preview the society’s plans to construct a display at this year’s Boston flower show, the week of March 12–20. The creation of a springtime landscape, indoors and in the dead of winter, requires both art and artifice. Learn how the installation was designed, how the plant material was chosen and prepared and how construction will proceed

Admission is free for members and $5 for nonmembers for each lecture. Registration is required, 401-847-1000, ext 160, or NewportMansions.org.
