NHS Wrestlers Beat Stratford, Compete in Guilford

Newtown High School’s wrestling team defeated Stratford 45-36 in the season-opening match on the road on December 18 and had some strong individual performances in the Guilford Invitational this past Saturday. John Gouveia captured the invitational title in the 130-pound weight class.

Results from the Stratford match are as follows: 103 - Nick Crudo (N) pinned Mark Morquette 4:34; 112 - Kevin Murat (S) pinned Leigh Gerety 1:28; 119 - Ian McEvoy (N) pinned Dave Trapasso 1:47; 125 - Joe Pieretti (N) dec. Jim Bova 11-3; 130 - John Gouveia (N) pinned Mohammed Ali 2:44; 135 - Brandon Tomlinson (S) pinned Jason Marks 5:32; 140 - Cory Fisher (N) pinned Vaughn Stokes 1:31; 145 -Will Northrop (N) pinned Brian Santiago 2:39; 152 - Vinny Valente (S) pinned Steven Gardner 2:33; 160 - Brian Kuruc (N) pinned Mike Neita 3:10; 171- Dan Milot (N) pinned Mike Fahey :58; 189 - John Santiago (S) pinned Rob Franzino 1:17; 215 - Robert Peck (S) won by forfeit; 285 - Joe Valente (S) pinned David Bray 1:26.

The Guilford Invitational brought together grapplers from Guilford, Newtown, Brien McMahon, Fairfield Warde, Melville (Long Island), Stratford, East Haven and Wilton. Gouveia, after a first-round bye, won the championship for the third year in a row by pinning all three of his opponents: James Neamonitis of  Fairfield Warde in 2.37, Stephen Daddio from Guilford in 2.51, and Ian McAllister of Fairfield Warde in 1.36. CJ Donahue (135-pound weight class) made it to the semifinals and placed fourth and Fisher came out of the tournament with a 4-1 record.
