Rolled Backward
Newtown Police report Kiersten Fallon, 21, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Ford Fiesta, was traveling westbound on School House Hill Road at 3:12 pm November 20. Ruth Appiah, 51, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2012 Hyundai Sonata, was traveling westbound on School House Hill Road behind Fallon. Fallon came to a stop at the stop sign at the intersection with Hanover Road, and Appiah came to a stop behind her. Fallon’s vehicle rolled backwards and hit Appiah’s vehicle, back to front.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Fallon was given a verbal warning for unsafe backing.
Stopped Due To Pedestrian
Newtown Police report Violet Griffin, 22, of Easton, operating a 2022 Buick Encore, was stopped in traffic on South Main Street at 3:27 pm December 5. Leslie Accousti, 49, of Newtown, operating a 2012 BMW X6, was stopped in traffic on South Main Street ahead of Griffin. Accousti started to move but came to a quick stop due to a pedestrian. Griffin did not stop in time, and rear-ended Accousti.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Griffin was given a verbal warning for following too closely.
Three-Car Incident At High School
Newtown Police report Dustin Goss, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2008 Acura MDX, was parked in the lot of Newtown High School at 12:46 pm December 6. Goss attempted to back out of a space, and hit the front bumper of an unoccupied 1995 Lexus LS owned by Cynthia Matheson-Naramore of Sandy Hook. Goss’ vehicle continued to drag along the side of Matheson-Naramore’s vehicle until the back bumper, and the force of the impact pushed the passenger’s side front bumper of Matheson-Naramore’s vehicle into a 2006 Volkswagen New GTI also owned by Matheson-Naramore.
No injuries were reported. The Lexus was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Grand Cherokee Hits Tiguan
Newtown Police report Ella Morits, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was backing into a parking spot in the Newtown High School parking lot at 9:39 am December 8. Morits said that as she was backing, an uninvolved vehicle pulled through the spot, distracting her and causing her to continue forward, hitting the rear bumper of a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan owned by Nikolaus Braun of Bethel.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Hit Mailbox and Stone Wall
Newtown Police report Michael Crowley, 37, of Newtown, operating a Toyota Scion, was traveling eastbound on Jeremiah Road at 8:51 pm December 8. Crowley’s vehicle went off the roadway, ran over a mailbox, over a small stone wall, and came to a rest in the woods.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.
Crowley was arrested and charged with evading responsibility in causing property damage and failure to drive in the proper lane.
Struck Railroad Bridge
Newtown Police report Daniel Rodriguez, 23, of the Bronx, N.Y., operating a 2022 IHC truck rental, was traveling eastbound on Botsford Hill Road at 1:06 am December 10. While negotiating a left hand curve, and after disregarding bridge height signs, the top carriage of the vehicle struck the railroad bridge.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.
Rodriguez was issued a verbal warning for failure to obey height requirements.
Fender Bender In Lot
Newtown Police report Martin Eaton, 24, of Ansonia, operating a 2003 Ford Expedition, was exiting a parking lot at 6 Queen Street at 10:03 am December 13. The right side of Eaton’s vehicle struck the left side of an unoccupied 2014 BMW 328d owned by Antonio Pina of Sandy Hook.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
One Injured In Collision
Newtown Police report James Italiano, 62, of Westport, was traveling northbound on South Main Street, waiting to make a left turn into a driveway, at 1:54 pm December 13. Michael Lambert, 34, of Ridgefield, operating a 2014 Ford Fusion, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Italiano crossed the center line, and the front of Lambert’s vehicle collided with the right side of Italiano’s vehicle.
A passenger in Italiano’s vehicle was transported to Danbury Hospital for possible injuries. Lambert was treated at the scene but was not transported. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Italiano was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way while making a left turn.
Lambert was issued an infraction for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
Following Too Close
Newtown Police report James Niver, 57, of Somers, operating a 2018 Toyota Rav4, was traveling eastbound on Key Rock Road at 4:46 pm December 13. He was traveling behind a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country operated by Elizabeth Ovesny, 53, of Southbury. Both vehicles came to a stop at a stop sign, then proceeded forward. Ovesny began to proceed eastbound towards Sugar Street and then came to a stop, and Niver rear-ended her vehicle.
A passenger in Niver’s vehicle complained of arm pain but declined to be evaluated by EMS. Niver’s vehicle was towed.
Niver was issued a written warning for following too closely resulting in an accident.
Collision In Intersection
Newtown Police report Vandy Phonvichith, 55, of Danbury, operating a 2013 Lexus GS, was traveling westbound on Hattertown Road at 6:11 pm December 13. Sebastian Champagne, 31, of Redding, operating a 2016 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling northbound on Poverty Hollow Road. Champagne came to a stop at the stop sign on Poverty Hollow Road, and then Phonvichith came to a stop at the stop sign on Hattertown Road. Champagne began to proceed through the intersection toward Key Rock Road, and then Phonvichith entered the intersection, heading straight. The front of Phonvichith’s vehicle struck the front passenger side of Champagne’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Phonvichith’s vehicle was towed.
Phonvichith was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.
Hit Deer
Newtown Police report Meredith Roland, 52, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, was traveling northbound on Boggs Hill Road at 9:28 pm December 13. A deer entered the northbound lane from the right side of the roadway, and Roland’s vehicle struck the deer.
Roland was not injured. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Charged For Evading
Newtown Police report Nazario Rosado, 40, of Bridgeport, was arrested at 8:40 pm December 15 on the charges of improper use of marker plates, illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, evading responsibility for injury of property damage, improper turns, and interfering with an officer. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of January 3 in Danbury Superior Court.
Lost Chapstick Causes Incident
Newtown Police report Traci Torres, 46, of Monroe, operating a 2023 Rivian R1s, was traveling eastbound on Meadow Brook Road at 4:36 pm December 15. Torres told police she dropped her chapstick and looked down to find it, and while doing so, she went off the road and hit a utility pole.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.
Torres was issued an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.
Suspended License
Newtown Police arrested Cristofer Zunun, 23, of New Haven, at 8:30 pm December 15 on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension and operating a vehicle that doesn’t meet tinted auto glass requirements. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of January 2 in Danbury Superior Court.
Collision At Flagpole
Newtown Police report that Matthew Feimer, 49, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 5:10 am December 16. Laura Tarzia, 35, of Brookfield, operating a 2009 Acura TSX, was traveling northbound on Main Street. Feimer stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Main Street, but failed to grant right of way to Tarzia, who did not have a stop sign. The front driver’s side bumper of Tarzia’s vehicle struck the rear driver’s end of Feimer’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Tarzia’s vehicle was towed.
Feimer was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection and illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance.
DUI Charge
Newtown Police report that at 8:13 am December 16, the Newtown Police Department received a call of a vehicle being operated in an erratic manner. It was reported that the driver of the vehicle was actively consuming a bottle of liquor, and that they had pulled over in front of the Newtown General Store on Main Street. Upon arrival, police conducted an investigation and arrested Raymond Omarra, 69, of Sandy Hook, and charged him with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Omarra was released on a $500 bond with a court date of January 2 in Danbury Superior Court.
Erratic Driver
Newtown Police report that at 9:48 pm December 17, officers responded to a call of a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner in the area of Zoar Road. Officers located the vehicle and observed it unable to maintain a lane. They executed a traffic stop and a roadside investigation was conducted. Camille Anzolletti, 31, of Milford, was arrested and charged with operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failure to drive in the proper lane.
Anzolletti was released on a $1,000 bond with a court date of January 2 in Danbury Superior Court.
Hyundai Hits BMW
Newtown Police report Suzanne Hurley, 53, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Hyundai Sonata, was parked facing northbound in the parking lot of 170 Mt Pleasant Road. Alexa Wissell, 20, of Southbury, operating a 2014 BMW 528xi, was parked facing southbound in an adjacent spot. Hurley attempted to back out and the rear left bumper of her vehicle struck the rear right bumper of Wissell’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Reckless Driving Charges
Newtown Police report that on December 19, Alvaro Alberto, 59, of New Milford, was detained by New Milford Police after it was discovered he had an active warrant for his arrest from the Newtown Police Department. He was arrested and brought to Newtown, where he was charged with improper use of marker plates, illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, reckless driving, engaging the police in pursuit, passing in a no passing zone, and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
He was released on a $5,000 bond with a court date of January 11 in Danbury Superior Court.
