‘Kick-Stop’ Major New Year’s Resolutions

NEW MILFORD —The New Year is almost here — along with those New Year’s resolutions to quit smoking and/or lose some of the extra pounds after the holiday season.  New Milford Hospital can help individuals get on track with programs scheduled during the month of January.

Smoking increases the chances of developing heart disease, emphysema, and lung and other cancers, and quitting, no matter how long someone has been smoking, decreases the risk of smoking related diseases. For those looking to quit, on Monday, January 11, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm the New Milford Hospital Preventive Cardiology Program begins an American Cancer Society Freshstart quit smoking program. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for a two-week period.

Freshstart is the American Cancer Society’s quit smoking program, and all of the methods and activities contain the most effective elements for success. The American Cancer Society states that the single most important is element is you — and your dedication to fight the addiction to nicotine that makes you want to smoke.

Freshstart can be your start to a new life without cigarettes. This program is designed to help you stop smoking, and emphasizes that smoking cessation is a two-part process: 1) stopping and 2) staying stopped.

The cost for the program is $25 per participant with a $5 refund for each class attended.

Anyone struggling with weight control may find an answer to long-term weight reduction and management in a new four-part class, which runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 19, 21, 26 and  28, from 6 to 7:30 pm.

The weight management series will be held at Carlson Therapy Network, 130 B Grove Street in New Milford. It is located in back of the New Milford Sports Club.

This program will orient individuals to the basic principles of weight management, including nutrition, exercise, and sleep hygiene, to help reach and maintain an ideal weight. Those who want to shape up and lose a few pounds or improve their overall health to manage an existing health condition, New Milford Hospital’s team of experts will offer a wealth of information to jump start the effort, and encourage long-term weight management in cooperation/consultation with one’s primary care physician.

The cost for the four-part program is $30.

Registration is open to the public, and is requested by calling 800-350-1595 or online at www.newmilfordhospital.org.
