NMS Students Put A Cap On Labels And Spread Cheer

By Eliza Hallabeck

Members of Newtown Middle School’s Labels Are For Jars Club, a group of students dedicated to understanding one another, ventured to Newtown’s dog pound on Friday, December 17, with stockings filled with dog treats.

Thanks to club member Connor Lemay’s father, the group also had two bags of dog food to donate to the animal control facility.

The Labels Are For Jars Club started at the school in October, and has grown from four members to 27 members attending the club’s last meeting, according to club advisor Arlene Spoonfeather.

“It’s just a group of students against labeling,” said one of the four club organizers, eighth grader Kole Giovannoni.

“Or bullying of any sort,” fellow club organizer eighth grader Lexi Samuels continued.

Eighth graders Ashley Marx and Tricia Sullivan also brought the club together with Kole and Lexi.

During normal meetings, according to Ashley, club members “just talk, hang out, and have fun.”

Lexi explained the goal of the club is to get people to be nicer to one another.

Visiting the dog pound and spreading holiday cheer to the dogs — Chevy, Rocky, Maximus, Russell, Theo, Winston, and Taz — was Ms Spoonfeather’s idea, according to the students.

“If anyone from the middle school or high school wants to join,” said Lexi, “the more the merrier.”

The Newtown Middle School Labels Are For Jars Club meets every other Wednesday.
