NHS Swimmers Win First Two

Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ swimming and diving team is off to a solid start after winning its season-opener at Masuk in Monroe on December 17, then defeating Bunnell of Stratford in the first home meet of the campaign, on December 21.
The Nighthawks bested Masuk 97-76 behind a strong effort across the board. Newtown had one-two finishes in swimming every event, and took the third spot in several categories as well.
âYou canât really ask for much more. The guys swam great,â Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin said.
In the 200 meter relay, Newtownâs team of Rich Huffman, Nick Lafky, Abben Hung, and Dan Hufziger took first in a time of 1:45.22. The contingent of Sean Fahey, Austin Adamcheck, Michael Hubbard, and Jordan Simonds took second in 1:57.75.
Newtown then won first and second in the 200 freestyle event with Conor Donnelly finishing in 1:56.09 and George Delia following in 2:04.59.
 In the 200 individual medley, Lafky was first in 2:10.96, Hung second in 2:20.31, and Adamcheck rounded out the top-three in 2:29.96.
In the 50 free, Hufziger was first in 23.49, Hubbard second in 24.62, and Logan Mammen came in third in 25.11.
Maggie Korth led the way in the diving event and qualified for the state tournament in her first effort of the season. She was followed by second-place finisher Sam Freitas, and third-place finisher Kaitlyn VonWinkel.
The 100 butterfly event was won by Lafky in 59.75. Huffman captured second in 1:01.35, and Adamcheck placed third in 1:08.99.
Newtown again earned the top three spots in the next event, the 100 free. Hufziger finished in 52.04, and was followed by Mammen in 57.05, and Delia in 57.93.
The 200 free relay team of Hung, Hubbard, Mammen, and Hufziger was the first to finish, making the final touch in 1:35.16. Simonds, Adam Hufziger, Michael Lally, and Zach Baudisch combined for a runner-up placement in 2:00.08.
In the 100 backstroke event, Huffman was first in 1:03.16, followed by Fahey in 1:07.63, and Frank Biancardi in 1:12.50.
Hung won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.23, Hubbard came in second in 1:09.88, and Simonds placed third in 1:19.94.
Newtown took a one-two finish in the 400 freestyle relay with Mammen, Lafky, Delia, and Donnelly won the event in 3:43.72. Adamcheck, Fahey, Lally, and Huffman were second in 3:58.62.
In the win over Bunnell, a 93-80 victory, the Nighthawks got things started with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay competition. Huffman, Hung, Lafky, and Dan Hufziger were first in 1:48.95.
 The Nighthawks took the top three spots in the 200 free with Donnelly first in 1:57.65, Fahey second in 2:11.07, and Lally third in 2:25.26.
In the 200 IM, Newtown didnât win, but earned key points with second and third place finishes. Hung was runner-up in 2:20.85, and Huffman came in third in 2:23.26.
Newtown followed with a one-two finish in the 50 free as Dan Hufziger won the race in 23.74 and Hubbard was second in 24.80.
The swimmers took a break for the diving competition and Newtown swept the top three spots with Frietas coming in first place, VosWinkel second, and Nick Snyder third.
In the 100 fly, Hung and Delia finished in second and third, respectively, with time of 1:04.24 and 1:04.30.
 The Nighthawks put together another one-two-three triumph in the 100 free as Dan Hufziger led the way in 52.70. Hubbard followed in 55.06, and Mammen was third in 57.00.
 In the 500 free, Donnelly placed first in a time of 5:14.93. Fahey was second in 5:49.48, and Lally was third in 5:55.39.
In the 200 free relay, Newtown took top honors with Hung, Mammen, Hubbard, and Dan Hufziger finishing in 1:36.69.
 Newtown took the top three spots in the 100 back as Huffman earned first in 1:05.06, Mammen was second in 1:12.08, and Biancardi third in 1:15.61.
In the 100 breaststroke, Lafky was first in 1:06.47.
Newtownâs 400 free relay contingent of Mammen, Delia, Huffman, and Donnelly was first in 3:50.89.
