Holiday Hours

C.H. Booth Library will be closed Friday, December 24, through Sunday, December 26.

Regular hours will be in effect Monday, December 27, though Wednesday, December 29.

The library will be closing early – at 5 pm – on Thursday, December 30, and will then remain closed Friday, December 31, through Sunday, January 2.

Regular hours will resume on Monday, January 3.

Young Adults

*Budding Theatrical Writers Wanted! The Playstages 2005 Playwriting Contest has been announced.

Students in grades 3-9 can submit scripts as individuals or teams. This national contest awards two Grand Prizes of $500 each and recognizes many other scripts as well. Submission deadline is February 15.

*Scrabble Club continues on Sunday afternoons with informal play for all ages in the Young Adult area. Drop in and have some fun with this classic word game from 1 to 5 pm. Check out games at the main desk for play in the library.

Players can play the classic version or Scrabble Junior, whichever they’re more comfortable with.

*Creative Writing: A fiction writing workshop will be offered for young people in grade 6 and up beginning January 24. This is the second creative writing program of the 2004-05 year, and will be led by professional writer and teacher Wally Wood, a Newtown resident.

Meetings will be on alternate Monday evenings from 6-8 pm on the following dates: January 24, February 7 and 28, and March 14 and 28.

Participants are expected to attend all five session meetings. There is no fee, but the program is limited to 15 participants.  Sign up at the Main Floor Circulation Desk or call the library.

Adult Programs

*Blood Pressure Screenings: Ashlar of Newtown will sponsor its next morning of free blood pressure screenings on Wednesday, December 29.

A registered nurse will be at the library between 10 am and noon. No appointments are necessary, and free information about controlling and preventing elevated blood pressure levels will be available.

*4th Annual Holiday Concert: On Friday, January 7, at 8 pm, Newtown resident Richard Serbagi will conduct the Concert Society of Putman and Northern Westchester at Trinity Episcopal Church, 36 Main Street. A reception will follow the performance.

The 4th annual Holiday Concert will feature John Hanulik, playing the oboe d’amore, and a work written by Connecticut composer Joseph Russo in memory of 9/11. Back by acclamation is soprano Maria Ferrante singing selected arias from Messiah.

Violinist Eric Lewis will be the soloist as Maestro Serbagi conducts Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

Tickets can be purchased at C.H. Booth Library or Newtown Savings Bank. No tickets will be sold at the door. All proceeds of the performance will purchase non-fiction books for the library’s Children’s Department of the library.

C.H. Booth Library, at 25 Main Street, can be reached at 426-4533. Winter hours have returned: The library is now open Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm, Friday from noon to 5 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.
