Grades 2-3

In Saturday action at Hawley School The Cheetahs performed well in double header action and the offensive standouts were Elizabeth Texiera, Amanda Hagaschi and Shannon Muckell while Eliza Roth, Peri Meeker, and Catie Texiera played great defense.

 For the Deadly Sharks Olivia Buchler, Shannon Kelleher, Madison Hintze, Julia Gerace and Emma Magazu were the offensive leaders. The defense was anchored by the tenacious play of Ella Hage, Sarah Savinelli, Kendall Reed and Ava Iazetta.

The Pink Panthers received terrific offensive performances by Madeline Patrick, Morgan Melillo, Katie Garner, Emily Tressler, Catherine Murray and Dorina Limani. On the defensive end, outstanding efforts were given by Ally McCarthy, Kennedy Cope, Victoria Duarte, Lily Swansiger and Emma Dinallo.

The Murphy Basketball Camp Orange Crushers had a fantastic showing on Saturday. The aggressive offensive attack was led by Grace Eurell, Amyla Posey, Kate Petersen, Chole O’Connell, and Shea Murphy. Erin Phaneuf, Scarlett Long, Rachel Arena, and Rebecca Filiato dominated the defensive end with lots of great steals and solid rebounding throughout the entire game.

Grade 4

Filan LLC Nighthawks 46, Green Hornets 18: The Filan LLC Nighthawks prevailed over the tenacious and tough Green Hornets. Team Captain for the game, Sarah Tressler, scored 10 points for the Nighthawks. In all, 7 players scored for the Hawks. Grace Bertsche, Kali Ryder, Megan Riccardi, Jane Shearin each dropped in a basket with Angela Carriero tallying 6 points. Nighthawk Karsen Pirone was nearly unstoppable with 22 points and Ryssa Swanson set key screens to spring her teammates open. Faith O’Hara and Hallie Filan played tough defense to lead the Hawks. The Hawks flashed their passing and defensive skills throughout the game. Juliette Cryder and Kylee Raiano were the top scorers for the Hornets, combining for 14 points. Zoe Waller was the defensive star while Alea Willis was the rebound leader.

Purple Crush 20, Tootsie Rolls 20: After exchanging multiple lead changes throughout a hard fought game, the Purple Crush and the Tootsie Rolls ended in a 20-20 tie. Ashley Hammond was the offensive star and top scorer for the Purple Crush with 6 points. Rebecca Alicea and Katie Ryan contributed 4 points apiece while Olivia Steare, Nicky Shairer and Annabel Terry each scored two points. Eileen McCreary battled hard under the boards to corral defensive rebounds while Sydney Howard seemed to be in all the right spots for the Crush. For the Tootsie Rolls, Carly Smith was the high scorer with 10 points. Colleen Phaneuf and Kaitly King each scored 4 points while Dirga and Ackers contributed with 2 points. Mary Celentano pulled down 6 rebounds while Lauren Ackers was the defensive star with 3 steals.

Tootsie Rolls 22, Mr Mac’s Canteen Celtics 20: Although in the first half the Tootsie Rolls appeared to be tired from their first game, they outlasted the Celtics 22-20. The Tootsie Rolls trailed 12-6 at the half, but were energized in the second half by Carly Smith’s 10 points. Katie Dirga had 4 assists and Gwen Drew was the defensive star with 2 steals. For Mr Macs Canteen Celtics, Shannon Jackman was the high scorer with 6 points, while Cyleigh Wilson and Genevieve Murray had 4 points apiece. Anna Burns was the defensive star and Carolyn Malin was the rebound leader.

Grade 5

Newtown 23, Stamford 4: Newtown opened league play for the season with a strong win over Stamford. Jenna Lavelle scored 7 points, Kim Buttery had 5, Kristen Cirone and Alison Kelleher chipped in 4 each, and Carolina Stubbs rounded out the scoring with 3 points. Jackie Matthews controlled the game at the point and had many steals.

Norwalk 22, Newtown 21: In a nail biter down to the wire, Newtown found its first challenging league opponent in a scrappy Norwalk squad. Norwalk took an early lead, but Newtown tied it up in the first half and kept the game within reach for the remainder of the game. With three well-executed out of bounds possessions in the last minute of the game, Newtown simply couldn’t get their shots to drop. Kristen Cirone and Alison Kelleher had stellar performances, playing tough defense and pounding the boards. Tess Davenport maintained composure at the point and created several scoring opportunities. Kelleher led all scorers with 7 points, with contributions from 5 other players to round out the scoring.

Newtown 10, Devon 36: In the first game of Christian Heritage Tournament play, Newtown faced an experienced Devon squad with a distinct size advantage. Despite a fierce effort, Newtown was no match for the Devon team. Jenna Lavelle had numerous steals and great passes on the transition offense. Lauren Adams and Kim Buttery played scrappy defense and had several assists. Nicki DaPra and Carolina Stubbs hung tough in the paint against the Devon post players.

Grades 5-6

Inspirations For Your Home, LLC/Mean Green Fighting Machine 18, Shooting Stars 17: A ball hawking defense by Evelyn Schwertley provided the turnovers to allow the Machine’s Shannon Chheh (6 points), Alex Futterman (4) and Dylan Zahansky (6) to carry a lead into the fourth quarter. The Stars put up a valiant fourth quarter attack, but ended up falling to the Mean Green Fighting Machines in a nail-biter Saturday morning with a buzzer beater shot sealing the defeat for the Stars. The Stars press put them ahead by one point after three quick baskets and a foul shot by Charli Condon. The intense defensive effort was led by Kit Shaw, Sarah Widman and Allie Eurell. Lauryn Ankers led the team in rebounds.

Raymond James Financial/Shock 24, Space Narwhals 17: The Shock put forth a great defensive effort led by Angela Vadola, Julia Clark and Heather Stroli. Balanced scoring from Julia Anderson, Rebecca Gavel, Jordan Williams and Lexi Leidlein created enough points to win a hard fought victory. The short handed Narwhals put up a strong effort with Hayley Lambert contributing 8 pts and Briana Castellano contributed 4 points in the effort. Hayley Lambert and Vanessa Tucker hustled for a number of steals and Julia Sullivan added a strong defensive effort but it wasn’t enough.

Tasmanian Devils 18, Dr Della Schmid Chiropractic Centre/Sunburst 12: The Orange Sunburst jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter, but the Tassies clawed their way back into the game with some stingy defense by Ally Tassiello and Sarah Brittin to take an 8-6 lead at the half. The strong defensive effort by both teams continued and contributed to maintaining a 2 point margin going into the final quarter. Ava Petrellese then took over offensively in the 4th quarter for the Tassies with 6 points. Jackie Moccio, Sienna Cummings and Nathalie Schickendantz provided great hustle on defense and Kayla O’Rourke added a strong rebounding effort for the Tassies. The Orange Sunburst tried valiantly to make a comeback but came up short. Chloe Bigwarfe, Jackie Gouveia and Sarah Dowling led the charge on offense. Kendra Saunders and Jaclyn O’Leary led the passionate defense and rebounding.

Monstrosity 18, Hip Hoopsters 10: After starting out behind 4–0 Monstrosity got their offense going in the second quarter as Dani Otero contributed 4 of her 6 points by going aggressively to the hoop. Monstrosity turned up the defensive heat in the second quarter with Katie Bassett (3 steals), Katie McCabe and Kaitlyn Child showing a lot of hustle. Cailin Wilson led all scorers with 8 points. The Hip Hoopsters played well in the loss. Grace Corcoran dribbled into the paint, pulled up and hit a jumper to even the game up in the second quarter. Jenna Gonski played tough defense along with solid rebounds and blocks by Liz Weisergerber. Heather Azzarito controlled the offensive tempo at point guard. At the end of the game the Hip Hoopsters applied full court pressure but it still was not enough as Monstrosity continued to drain shots from around the key.

Grade 6

Newtown 36, Ridgefield 16: Newtown took control of the game early in a definitive win over Ridgefield. Alexis Mason overpowered Ridgefield with her inside game, pouring in 16 points for Newtown. Erin Burns added five points, while Julia Doyle and Julia Haskins each added four. Ashley Santore and Lauren Carrino had solid games at both ends of the court for Newtown.

Newtown 33, Wilton 22: Newtown came out on top in a very close game against Wilton. Newtown relied on the ball handling skills of guard Rylee Mulligan to control the tempo of the game. Marcella Daily and Sarah Houle had eight points apiece, while Alexis Mason and Kira Smith combined for seven points in the paint.

Newtown 24, Westport 27: Newtown lost its first game of the season against a tough Westport team. In a very physical game, Erin Burns posted nine points for Newtown. Marcella Daily added nine, while Julia Haskins and Julia Doyle kept Newtown close to the very end with tough rebounding and solid defense.

Grade 7

Norwalk 44, Newtown 29: Norwalk’s size and speed were too much for Newtown. Hailey Conrad led the way with a season high 13 points, followed by Jillian Pieretti with 7 and Meghan Doyle with 3. Bella Luciano added a basket and played strong defense.

Stamford 27, Newtown 23: Newtown closed with an 11-4 run, but it was not enough to catch Stamford. Conrad scored 10 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Cassidy Datin and Pieretti added 4 points apiece. Colleen McCarthy dished off 4 assists from the point, and Jess Maturo came up with 4 steals. Natalie Shaker added a basket and 4 rebounds.

Wilton 32, Newtown 17: Wilton broke open a close game by scoring the first 14 points of the second half. Conrad had 7 points and 7 rebounds. Pieretti had 4 points and 5 boards. Maturo added 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Newtown 31, New Fairfield 27: Newtown got back in the win column with a hard fought victory over arch rival New Fairfield. Doyle had 8 of her game high 10 points in the first quarter. Conrad had 8, followed by Nikki Zaccaro and Olyvia Shaw with 5 apiece.

Darien 24, Newtown 17: Darien scored half of its points from the foul line as Newtown saw three players foul out. Shaw had a strong all-around game with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Datin had 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Pieretti had 7 steals and 5 rebounds, while Shaker had 5 boards and added a basket. McCarthy hit a long 3-pointer midway through the third to give Newton its last lead of the game.

Boys

Grades 2-3

Ten Muskateers: Jack Street, Mark Sadowski and Luke Hannan led the scoring barrage this past weekend, while Jacob Hinden, Brenda Morrisey, Jack Stenz and Julian Totir were incredibly active on defense and controlled the boards the entire contest.

Grade 3

Geckos vs the Slammers: The Gecko defense was led by the hustle of Ben Paley, John Sullivan and Mason Woodard who was all over the court. Jake “the Snake” Mailloux slithered through the Slammer defense setting up Andrew Bazuro down low and Jack Petersen and Alasdair Cathcart on the outside for some good baskets.

Mavericks 20, New Fairfield 18: C.J. Demers had eight points and nine rebounds and Luke Hannan had six points to go with five steals as the 3rd Grade Mavericks got there first win of the season. Nick Fischer hit two of his three shots for four points. Trevor Barrett, Steven Cotton, Carl Miller, TJ O’Connell, and Michael Haddick added key rebounds in the victory.

Grade 4

Fourth Grade Mavericks 40, Third Grade Mavericks 8: The third Grade Mavericks third grade team had their hands full with the fourth grade Mavs. Jack Mulligan led the White Mavericks with 21 points, while Jack Kuligowski added eight. Trevor Barrett hit for six points and Karl Miller added another field goal for the third Grade Mavericks. Luke Hannan and Michael Haddick played tough in the paint against the taller squad. Trevor Jacozzi and Neil Kalra played hard all afternoon.

St Theresa 24, Mavericks Blue 20: In a game that heated up in the second half, the Blue Mavericks lost a tough one to St Theresa. The Mavs offense was led by Nick Kalra with six points, Keenan Murphy and Josh Taylor with four each, and Zach Droukas, Drew Mitchell and Liam Murphy combining for another six points. Joey Rios and Taylor led the defense with a combined nine rebounds and one blocked shot each. Kieran Coffey and Dillon Robinson kept the pressure on the St Theresa squad to the end, but it wasn’t enough to hold on for the win.

Mavericks White 18, Easton 11: In the first game of a double header, the White Mavericks held off Easton for a win. Jack Mulligan and Kyle Sullivan combined for 10 points while Kyle Good added four points. Sam and Charlie Eppers wreaked havoc on the Easton guards with their trapping defense. Max Wrage, Jack Kuligowski, Patrick Oberstadt and Jack Lydon had solid all around games.

Mavericks White 40, St Theresa 18: In the second game of the double header, the White Mavericks proved too much to handle for the St.Theresa 3rd Grade squad as the team cruised to a comfortable 40-18 victory. Jack Mulligan led the scoring with 17 points, and Jack Lydon chipped in with four. Jack Kuligowski, Max Wrage and Kyle Sullivan combined for 12 points. Sam Eppers and Patrick Oberstadt ran the offense with strong play at the point. Charlie Eppers had a solid game with smothering defense, while Kyle Good controlled the boards.

Mavericks Blue 16, Easton 15: In a dramatic come from behind victory, the Blue Mavericks gave a complete team effort to beat Easton. Joey Rios led the offense with 10 points, including the winning shot with two minutes to go in the game. Josh Taylor tossed in four points and Zach Droukas added two in the win. Rios was dominant on the boards with 12 rebounds. Taylor had five rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. Kieran Coffey, Keenan Murphy and Liam Murphy combined for another seven rebounds, while Dillon Robinson’s focus on the Easton point guard disrupted the team’s efforts to score in the final minutes.

Bullets 22 Green Goblins 21: John Godino and JP Ford combined for 8 points for the Bullets. JP Ford led the offense with 4 assists. Quinn McAndrew had 5 steals and Ayden Kennedy 8 boards to lead the defense. JP Iaropoli hit the game winner with 15 seconds on the clock. Shilin Ray and Patrick Grover combined for 13 points for the Goblins while Nolan Adis manned the point and had 3 assists. Max Bloomquist had 5 steals on defense and Owen Meeker had 7 boards.

Tigers 36, Green Hornets 19: For the Tigers Jared Dunn and Atilla Sepkin each scored 8 points. Jack Lydon had 4 assists from the point. Justin Engler had 4 steals and Justin DeThomas had 9 rebounds on defense. For the Green Hornets Nick Kalra and Luke Azzarito combined for 15 points. Thomas Daigle distributed the ball well with 3 assists. Nathan Paltauf had 3 steals and James Tibolla had 7 boards on defense.

 Wolves 23 Spartans 15: Brandon Lutz and Will Swierbut combined for 13 points for the Wolves. Jack Kuligowski had 3 assists. On defense Eamon Doherty had 6 steals while Jacob Riley had 7 boards. Riley Ward and Adam Bowditch combined for 10 points to lead the Spartans. Kevin Gong led the offense with 4 assists while Jacob Enriquez had 5 steals and Will Hathaway had 8 rebounds.

Tarheels 24 Vikings 23: Jack Mulligan and Sean Roche combined for 15 points to lead the Tarheels while Devin O’Connell chipped in with 3 assists. Marlon Medina had 4 steals for the defense and Ben Selnerhad 7 rebounds. Shaine Luzietti and Thomas Armstrong each scored 6 points for the Vikings while Nicholas Hobar had 3 assists to lead the offense. Matt Bradbury was all over the court with 5 steals on defense and Chis Beal Swept the boards with 8 rebounds.

Grade 5

Newtown Mavs 10, Weston 9: Newtown had many good looks on this day, but only managed ten points, which was good enough for the win. Hary Lucas four points, Jack Hannan three points, Derrick Lewis two points and Garret Norberg one point . Harry Lucas was a one man show on the boards with eleven rebounds. Ben Futterman had five more steals, while Ryan Burns added four and Harry Lucas three.

New Milford 30, Newtown Mavs 10: Ryan Burns, Harry Lucas, Gavin Connors, Thomas Luciano and Ben Futterman each had two points. Jack Hannan, Harry Lucas and Garrett Norberg each had four rebounds. Foul trouble on the big men and the New Milford fast break were ultimately too much on this Saturday morning.

New Milford 41, Newtown Gold Rush 34: Shane Demers and Shea Talbot led the Gold Rush with 8 points each. Eric Moore was first on the board and finished the game with 6 points, followed by Danny Schreiber who each had 4 points. John Albanesi, James Clifford, Brennan Mayer, and Reed Hammond each chipped in 2 points. Cameron Trivers played strong in defense with 7 rebounds and several blocked shots. Riley McCafferty played an aggressive game on both offense and defense.

Fairfield 40, Newtown Gold Rush 21: Brennan Mayer scored 6 points for the Gold Rush, while John Albanesi, James Clifford, Riley McCafferty, Danny Schreiber and Shea Talbot combined for an additional 10 points. Shane Demers played well as point guard and added 4 points to the Gold Rush score. Eric Moore led the team in foul shots. Reed Hammond kept the pressure on and Cameron Trivers was a defensive force with multiple rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

Newtown Gold Rush 40, Monroe 22: Shea Talbot led the Gold Rush with 8 points, followed by John Albanesi who had 7 points. Eric Moore (5), James Clifford (2), Brennan Mayer (4), Shane Demers (6), and Reed Hammond (2) combined for an additional 19 points. Cameron Trivers played strong on defense with 9 rebounds and several blocked shots. Riley McCafferty and Danny Schreiber played an aggressive game on both offense and defense.

Newtown Gold Rush 33, Ridgefield 37: The Gold Rush fought back from a 13-point second half deficit against Ridgefield only to come up short. Cameron Trivers came away with 11 rebounds, 2 blocked shots, and 12 points. Shea Talbot led the team in foul shots and ended the game with 5 points. John Albanesi, James Clifford, and Reed Hammond chipped in 4 points each, while Shane Demers and Brennan Mayer added 2 points each. Riley McCafferty, Danny Schreiber and Eric Moore kept the pressure on with numerous rebounds and multiple assists.

Newtown 44, Ridgefield 22: Newtown utilized its intense pressure defense and a well balanced scoring attack to defeat Ridgefield. All ten Newtown players got in the scoring column with Michael Cotton and James Doyle leading the way with 8 points each. Robert Disibio and Jimmy Davies chipped in with 6 each, while Luke Barrett, Luke Melillo and Todd Petersen added 4 points each. Solid contributions were also received from Griffin Cross, Aidan Moulder and Bryan Vander Have.

Newtown 45, Southbury 20: Newtown exploded in the second quarter by outscoring its opponent 20-6 to cruise to victory over Southbury. In the quarter, Newtown was led by Robert Disibio, Jimmy Davies and Luke Barrett with 6, 4 and 4 points apiece. Disibio led all scorers for the game with 12 points, while Barrett, Davies, Aidan Moulder and Bryan Vander Have totaled 6 each on the game. Michael Cotton, Griffin Cross, James Doyle, Dan Mason, Luke Melillo and Todd Petersen were all solid on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

Adviserstrust.com Knicks 37, Orangemen 23: For the Knicks Garrett Norberg and Nicholas Accousti combined for 14 points. Tucker Garrity had 6 assists, Ben Futtermann had 6 steals and Garrett mandarano had 8 rebounds. Trevor Tyrrell and Easton Ricks combined for 17 points for the Orangemen. Chris Maturo led the offense with 3 assists while Harrison Farrah had 4 steals to key the defensive effort and Easton Ricks had 7 rebounds.

 Shooting Stars 18, Blue Blazers 14: The Stars were led by the scoring of Alex Budd and Timmy McCarthy who combined for 12 points who had 6 points. Thomas Briscoe had 3 assists while Alex Katsuleres and Carter McCleary led the way on defense. For the Blazers Luke Fischer and Ryan Burns combined for 8 points while Ryan Berard had 3 assists, Ryan Straiton had 5 steals and Jack Hannan had 8 rebounds

 The Hawks 34, Red Devils 24: For the Hawks James Schumacher and Harry Lucas combined for 21 points, while Thomas Luciano had 3 assists, Matthew Jaeger led the defense with 4 steals and Nowacki had 7 rebounds. For the Devils Andreas Nottelman and Ayden Kasbarian combined for 12 points. Jared Tod directed the offense from the point while Tommy Murray shone on defense and Karl Kelly had 10 boards.

Grade 6

Black Hawks 30, Invaders 26: The Invaders held a lead going into the 4th quarter when the Black Hawks stepped it up a notch. The Hawks offense was led by Thomas Skrelja, Robert Murray, Ben Terry; each with 8 points and Evan Landgrebe with 6. Defensively, they were led by Doug Carriero and Robert Murray each with 4 steals. Thomas Skrelja led the rebounding with 14 and Wally Skrelja did a great job controlling the Hawks offense at point guard. Zack DeMeglio and Jermane Anyoha also played great all around games. The Invaders were strong on the free throw line accounting for 10 of their 26 points. Michael Arthur, Ethan Aug, Jackson Dooley and Tyler Gaynor all shot 50 percent from the line and Ben Harrison was 3-for-8. Ben also grabbed numerous rebounds to keep the game close. Colin Kelly and Jack Miller played well directing traffic at point guard.

Monstars 28, Buckateers 20: Harry Eppers led the Buckateers with 7 points after shooting 3 for 9 from the floor and 1 for 2 from the free throw line. Eppers also grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and had 3 steals. Cameron Champagne added 6 points with a near perfect 3 for 4 shooting. Dylan Champagne, Liam Jones, Travis Huzina and Max Goldstein combined for 7 points to complete the Buckateers offense for the day. Tom Fitzgerald pounded the boards with 7 rebounds and added 3 steals. Jack Vaughn had a very good game as well leading the Buckateers with 5 steals.

Hot Shots 51, Sox 36: A game of streaks by both teams. The Hot Shots got out to an early 16-2 lead only to see it all slip away after a fiery comeback by the Sox. Finally in the second half, the Hot Shots were able to hold off the streaky Sox. Greg Brissette led the Hot Shots with 16 points, followed by Matt Principi with 8 and Kent Mullen with 7. Jack Murray and Nate Jones were tough on the boards with each pulling down key rebounds. Brendan O’Hara and Tristan Crone were both very active on the defensive side as well both hitting key baskets for the Hot Shots.

Thunder 37, Swishers 27: Team Thunder played a strong game maintaining a solid lead throughout. Eugene Citrano led the Thunder in scoring (18) with contributions from Kenny Malin, Matthew Sadowski, and Adam Farley. The strong Thunder defense was led by Matthew Sadowski and Kenny Malin with contributions by Kevin Reiss and Jack Buchler. The final two points were scored by Jack Carello with 30 seconds left in the game assisted by Kai Toomey. The Swisher attack was led by 6 points and 6 rebounds from Justin Woodard and Grant Moxham with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Wyatt Moyer, Ryan Williams and Liam Begany were great on the glass while Connor Dinallo played hard all game. Timmy Shaw and Ryan Mailloux were both outstanding at point guard.

Invaders 31, Tornadoes 27: Ian Klepacki kicked in to high gear in his fifth game of the season leading the Invaders. His inspirational play and hustle included grabbing rebounds, making steals, and sinking several jump shots. Tyler Gaynor and Dino Vogiatzis each had a strong game as well, with Tyler nailing two clutch free throws late in the fourth quarter. Ethan Aug and Jack Miller scored multiple times and forced many turnovers to help the Invaders. Dominic Scalzo and Benjamin Harrison were beasts on both ends of the court ripping down multiple rebounds. The Tornadoes had 7 players register points as John Finnegan, Brian Montoya, Kevin Riccardi, Adam Wolff, Owen Walsh, Avi Bhaya and Rhett Saunders all scored. Matthew Lundquist, Kevin Riccardi, Michael Garner and Bobby Ward were keys to helping the Tornadoes break the Invader’s press, but in the end they couldn’t contain the hot outside shooting of Ian Klepacki and Jack Miller.

Advisory Trust.com Doughnuts 41, Celtics 28: The Doughnuts played strong this week - with lots of good passing and full team efforts. Danny Grosso and Aidan Ford combined for 20 points. Mark Hall led defensive play. Kyle Gaynor was the rebound king with plethora of steals. Jimmy Doutney had a well-rounded game and Teddy Wojcik played aggressively throughout. Nick and Josh Harper balanced the team’s offensive play. The Celtics could not take advantage of easy bucket opportunities. Leading the C’s defense were Cayden (The General) Dunn and Cameron (The Enforcer) MacDonald. The General did well against the Doughnut’s shooters, forcing deep shots, getting key steals and defensive rebounds, while The Enforcer showed off his muscle in the second half shutting down his defensive assignment to keep the game close before the Doughnuts pulled away. Also playing well for the Celtics were Owen (The Roadrunner) Rahr and Jack (Big Diesel) Bittman. The Roadrunner lived up to his pseudonym and was all over the court on both the offensive and defensive ends, and helped to lead the C’s 2nd half press, while the Big Diesel was all fueled up and grabbed down key rebounds, and put back layups and at times shooting down at the basket with his height and mad ups combo.

Black Hawks 32, Sox 26: The Sox were leading the contest going into the 4th quarter when the Black Hawks offense came to life. Scoring leaders were Evan Landgrebe with 12 and Robert Murray with 8 points. Also scoring for the Hawks were Ben Terry, Wally Skrelja, Jack Ciaramello and Ricky Mariani. The leading rebounders for the B-Hawks were Thomas Skrelja with 11 and Ben Terry with 8. Doug Carriero and Wally Skrelja played tough defense throughout the game. Dylan Sock and Chris ‘Dogbone’ Daubert led the Sox offense with Kyle Chernoff controlling the boards and dishing out several assists.

Mount Vernon 51, Newtown Tough Guys 26: The Tough Guys played full-steam ahead against Mount Vernon, led by small but stealth Liam Deakin, sneaky Ryan Escoda and big-guy Adam Bergeron. On his tippy-toes, Silas Decker managed to box out and slow the assault, with help from aggressive play by Ryan Kost and Kyle Roche. Irwin Grewal, Andrew DeLuca and Jake Perone got to rebounds off the few shots Mount Vernon missed.

Greenwich 43, Newtown 40: The Newtown Tough Guys returned to Greenwich with an aggressive assault led by Ryan Kost, a shooting machine, Kyle Roche, and Nick Weiland. Andrew DeLuca, Silas Decker, Irwin Grewal and Jake Perone hit ‘em hard under the boards, grabbing rebounds and giving Greenwich a battle. Liam Deakin and Ryan Escoda’s lightning fast moves surprised Greenwich, and the big-guy Bergeron controlled the court with brains and strength. An undetected dirty-trick foul halted Roche’s 3 pointer to tie up the game, and Newtown can’t wait until next time.

New Canaan 60, Newtown 47: Nemesis New Canaan bested the Tough Guys, despite the dynamic play of Kyle Roche, Ryan Kost, Big-guy Bergeron and Evan Eggleston. Ryan Escoda and Jake Perone also played well. Andrew DeLuca and Irwin Grewal were madmen under the boards, and Nick Weiland was on fire, while Liam Deakin and Kost grabbed rebounds and nailed well-earned foul shots.

Grade 7

Newtown 63, Danbury 45: The Nighthawks ran out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back, running their record to 3-0 in league play. Hayes Kelchner lead the scoring with 21 points, Justin Dunn hit two 3-pointers and totaled 9 points. Jack Lavelle was a defensive force and Connor Barrett had several nice passes for assists. Jack Moulder netted 11 points and Patrick Conte scored 6 points.

Newtown 51, Fairfield Hoops 48: The Nighthawks took the first game of the Southern Connecticut Holiday Tournament in Ansonia with a victory over a tough Fairfield Hoops squad. Fighting back from an early deficit, Newtown held as much as a 9 point lead in the second half and held on for the victory thanks to some strong inside play by Jack Lavelle who played aggressive defense and fought for several crucial rebounds. Hayes Kelchner led the Nighthawks with 25 points, Mitchell Savoca tallied 11 points, and Jack Moulder contributed 7.

Newtown Mavericks 41, Shelton 33: The Newtown Mavericks travel team was victorious Sat. against Shelton’s 7th grade team at the Newtown Youth Academy. Gavin Stubbs had a game high 18 points while Sam Grossano dished out four assists and netted 6 points. Solid man-to-man defense led to many fast break buckets while smooth ball movement and team play kept the Mavericks ahead for the whole game. Brian Flood was strong under the boards (6 points) and Andrew Lee (2 points) was a defensive specialist keying on Shelton’s athletic players. Connery Mayer (4 points) and Tommy Kitzmiller (5 points) controlled the pace well in the first Fairfield County Basketball League game win.

Fairfield PAL Hawks 46, Newtown Mavericks 32: The Mavericks were stopped by a Fairfield PAL Hawks team which outscored them 16-6 in the fourth quarter. Austin Engler helped keep it close for three quarters, leading the Mavericks with 9 points. Front court players Andrew Lee and Gavin Stubbs each had seven points and five rebounds, but could not keep the Hawks back court in check. Will Huegi (2 points, 2 assists) and Connery Mayer (3 points) played solid defense in the fast-paced, physical match-up.

Grades 7-8

Celtics 40, CTS Micro Bulldogs 22: The Celtics had a lethargic start to their game on Saturday but finished the game on a strong note. Midway through the 2nd quarter the entire Celtic team responded by play an up tempo game with fast breaks and forced turnovers. The Celtics success continued with a 10-0 run to start the 2nd half. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they lost one of their key players to game ending injury during the run. James Carney lead the Celtics with 10 points, 6 steals, Jake Courchene-Roy dropped in 8 points, 4 steals and Joe Durero added 7 points with 3 blocked shots. Defensively, John Pierce controlled the paint in second-half pulling down 6 rebounds. Nick Bourgeois led the CTS Micro Bulldogs with 8 points. Matt Frazzetta led the team with 15 rebounds and Max Weber led the team with 4 steals. Connor Flint, Philip Coffey and Ben Dieckman played solid defense.

 Wolfpack 46, Cool Runnings 44: Jimmy Buck and Jack Procaccini combined for 31points to lead the Wolfpack. Austin Kasbarian played an excellent floor game, turning several steals into fast break points. River Low played strong defense and hit a key three pointer for the Pack down the stretch.

Alpacas 52, Murphy Basketball Camp Da Bulls 49: Kyle Keeping’s block of a last second three pointer preserved the victory for the Alpacas. Henry Lyons and Nick Genovese led the balanced scoring attack, combining for 26 points. Chad Azzarito and Josh Houle also contributed strong all around games.

Eyes on the Prize 65, Big Dogs 43: Eyes on the prize won 65-43 behind a tremendous team effort...Sam Duffy spearheaded the offense with 20 pts, while Dylan Tyrell added 16 points, 11 boards, and 4 assists, and Steven Moccio added 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists. Andrew Ross and Elliott Bennett played their best games of the year, chipping in with a total 12 points and 13 rebounds. Robert Lombardo, Hunter Booker, Nick Lombardo, and Will Ballard contributed good overall games as they combined for 6 points, 13 rebounds, 7 steals, and 4 assists. The Big Dogs offense was led by Colin Patrick, James Accousti, Jerl Draper and Patrick Godino with 16, 10, 6 and 4 points respectively. The defense was pushed by Jack Phelps, Thomas Stanczyk, Paul Whitaker, Will LeMay, Tyler LaCroce and Alex Dunleavy.

Thunder 47, Lovino Brothers Thunderbirds 38: Bryan Kiley lead the offense with 10 pts well supported by Matt Davis (9 points), Austin Buss-Martinez (8 points) and Spencer Tolson (8 points). Austin Desouza, Owen Gray, Trystan Wagner and Evan Cerretta provided strong rebounding at both ends of the floor. Chris Mok and David Usher played with great energy and were the catalyst of the team.

Raymond James Financial Newtown Celtics 55, Grizzlies 34: The high scorer was Christian Thanasoulis with 24 points, the assist leader was ThomasGavel with 10, the defensive star was John DelRossi with 8, and the rebound leader was Tiernan Keane with 9. Fast paced game led by the double threat of Thanasoulis and Gavel. Great team defense.

Cushman & Wakefield Fury 40, Raymond James Financial Lockouts 40: In a very tight game that ended in a tie after overtime Noah Seri hit four 3-pointers in the final two minutes. Nick Lansing had 7 steals. Playing with only 8 players the Fury took a 6 point lead late in the fourth quarter and again late in overtime only to be victimized by late game 3-pointers by the Lockouts. Devin Luzietti led the Fury with 16 points after shooting 7 for 22 from the floor and 2 for 7 from the charity stripe. Devin was a strong force all over the court grabbing 18 rebounds for a double-double. He also had 4 assists and blocked 3 shots. Gordon Walsh hit a big 3-pointer in overtime and added four field goals inside the 3-point arc to finish with 11 points. Tommy Elliott was 3 for 4 from the free throw line and had 6 rebounds. Peter Clifford played a great game on both sides of the court shooting 4 for 9 for 8 points, grabbing 3 rebounds with 2 steals and a blocked shot.

Huskies 62, Wolverines 13: The strong Husky attack was led by Tim Vander Have, Sam Czel and Robert Katrinak combining for 47 points. The solid defense was controlled by Eric Mockovak, Marc Lasorsa, Jacob Steinbrey and Brad Capeci.
