John A. Butler, Sr, 79, of Grace Meadows, Southbury, died December 20 in Danbury Hospital. Mr Butler was the husband of the late June (Cisero) Butler.
Mr Butler was a longtime resident of Newtown where he was an employee of the Town of Newtown Highway Department and served as president of the Highway Workers Union. While in Newtown, Mr Butler served as the chief driver for the Newtown Ambulance Association and was a member of the Newtown Police Auxiliary and a constable for the Lake Zoar Authority.
He served in the US Army as a military policeman in Germany following World War II. He was a carpenter by trade and was self-employed for many years. Mr Butler was a resident of Southbury the past two years and had also lived in Bethel. He also previously was employed by Avco Lycoming in Stratford.
Mr Butler is survived by a sister, Lois Pratt of Newtown; a son, John A. Butler, Jr, and his wife, JoAnn, of Roxbury; two daughters, Linda Stephenson and her husband, Gary, of Milford, and Carol A. Novella of Waterbury; seven grandchildren, Bryan Novella, Jake Butler, Matthew Novella, Jenna Butler, Kelly Stephenson, Billy Stephenson, and Jordan Rose Butler.
Funeral services will be held 8 pm Friday, December 23, in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St, Newtown. Interment with military honors will be in Newtown Village Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home Friday from 4 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Southbury Ambulance Association, PO Box 1002, Southbury CT 06488.
