Snapshot: Ryan Broderick
Occupation: Mark Broderick (my father), Frank Lockwood, and I opened Reverie Brewing Company in February of 2019 after over a year of planning and build out as we had to do a ton of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work to build the taproom. My title is Managing Member, and I take care of all of the business finances, management, taproom, event planning, retail distribution, and whatever other dozens of hats being a small business owner requires.
Family: I met my wife, Alison, in Baltimore, Maryland, in 2010 where we were both living after graduating from Loyola College. We have since moved from Baltimore, to NYC, to Stamford, to Redding, and finally to Newtown, as we bought a house in Sandy Hook in the fall of last year. We have a wonderful daughter named Anna who will be two in January.
Pets: We have a 13-year-old lab/pit mix, Shae, that we rescued while in Baltimore.
What do you like to do in your free time? Before owning a small business, having a child, and there being a global pandemic, the answer would have likely been to travel but we haven’t done much of that lately! I love to play golf and hockey and still regularly play hockey once a week.
What is your favorite book? When I was in high school my mother gave me a copy of Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People and I read it but did not really retain any of it. It wasn’t until a few years after college while working a “real job” in finance I re-read it and it opened my eyes and really made you think about how to treat people, listen, and try to understand things from their perspective. Now that I am thinking about it, I am probably due to read it again soon!
What is your favorite travel destination? There are so many amazing places/cities in the world, but all trips are about the friends and family you share the experience with. My wife and I went to Spain a few years back and traveled from the wine country La Rioja to Barcelona and loved the food and culture. There are so many places I still want to visit!
What is the best part about Newtown? There is a true sense of community in Newtown that I feel I did not get in some of the other places we have lived. Part of that obviously is that owning a business in town has us naturally more ingrained with the town.
Who is your favorite musical artist? Almost everything besides hardcore rap and country. When we’re brewing or packaging we listen to a lot of punk/heavy metal but mainly I am a jam band guy. I’ve been listening to a lot of a local Connecticut band lately called Goose.
What is the greatest piece of advice you have ever been given? Just be kind, always.
What is something you cannot live without? Beer!
What is your proudest accomplishment? While we’re still pretty new at being parents, raising a daughter has been an amazing and fulfilling journey.
