Wrestlers Win Invitational Behind Leuci's 100th Victory
Newtown High School's wrestling team won the Fairfield Ludlowe Invitational on December 20, and 138-pound grappler James Leuci earned his 100th career win in the process. Anthony Falbo earned the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler Award.
The Nighthawks scored 317 points to easily outscore runner-up Ludlowe, which had 180. Newtown had 11 finalists and nine champions. Wrestlers from 14 schools participated in the tourney.
The following Newtown wrestlers won championships in their weight divisions:
106: Tom Leuci defeated Bethel’s Jack Lynch 4-1.
113: Luca Crudo defeated Ludlowe’s Austin Sherman 8-1.
126: Ed Lovely defeated Fairfield Prep’s Orlando Sanchez 17-5.
132: Matt Gonzalez pinned Brien McMahon of Norwalk’s Jason Martinez in 1:28.
138: James Leuci defeated Ludlowe’s Bobby Clark 7-5.
160: Connor LeMay defeated Staples of Westport’s Charles Lamento 4-1.
170: Anthony Falbo pinned Ludlowe’s Lee Stenild-Johansen in 5:46.
182: Logan Walsh defeated Bethel’s Brendan Macintyre 6-1.
195: Andy Hubina defeated New Britain’s Josh Graves 2-1.
145 grappler Alex Stavola and 152 wrestler Joe Accousti both finished second; 138 wrestler Ryan King was third; and 145 wrestler Chris Lajoie and 220 teammate Tom Long both came in fourth.
