And they did.
The girls and boys both defeated Bethel to open their campaigns ... the girls by a count of 38-25 and the boys by a count of 58-46.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Newtown 38, Bethel 25
Hustle and intensity were the key notes of the day as the Newtown Middle School eighth grade girls opened the 2006-07 season with a 38-25 win over Bethel.
Maggie Donahue scored 13 points and made several steals to lead the way while Marilyn LaCroce canned 13 points of her own. Alex Grant had a strong game at the point and popped in eight points as Jenna Bonaccorso paced the defense with three blocked shots.
The girls hosted Rochambeau on Thursday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Newtown 58, Bethel 46
A team with an inside presence is a hard one to overcome and the Newtown Middle School eighth grade boys have, perhaps, the best inside presence in the area.
Matt Datin canned 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Lions pounded Bethel, 58-46, to open the 2006-07 season. Josh Engler poured in a game-high 23 points while swiping five balls on the afternoon.
Sean Maher popped in nine points in the first quarter as Brian Reed and Max Brazo led the fast break, pushing the ball up the court every chance they had. Ishan Tatake, Sean Deveney and Rory Noonan played well off the bench.
The Lions hosted Rochambeau on Thursday.
