The Career Center At NHS Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.

If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship — Four scholarships, one in the amount of $5,000 and three for $1,000, will be awarded to the winners of this essay contest. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors who are US citizens with a GPA of at least 2.5 who will enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at a four-year college/university by fall 2007. Students who have been actively promoting skateboarding in their community will be given special consideration although the scholarship is awarded without regard to skateboarding skill. Information is available at skateboardscholarship.com and in the Career Center. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 20.

National Federation of the Blind —Each year the NFB gives a broad array of scholarships to recognize academic achievement by blind scholars. All applicants for these scholarships must be (1) legally blind and (2) pursuing or planning to pursue postsecondary course of study in a degree program at a US institution in the fall of 2007. Information is available at nfb.org. Applications are due by March 31.

Resolve to Evolve Essay Scholarship — High school seniors are eligible to enter the scholarships.com essay contest for scholarship awards. Entrants may select one of two topics about which to compose their essay. Question #1 is, “The Environment: Right, Wrong and Future.” Question #2 is, “Standardized Testing: The SAT & ACT College Admissions Tests.” The idea behind the “R2E” Essay Scholarship is to offer a solution and be constructively critical rather than just find fault with a given administration or organization. Information is available at scholarships.com and in the Career Center. All essays are due by April 30.

March of Dimes Essay Competition — A $400 cash award will go to the winner of this annual essay competition. There are two levels of entries for the competition. The first level is for high school juniors and seniors and the second level is for freshman and sophomores. The 2007 essay topic is, “Influenza: Can We Prevent the Next Pandemic?” The Career Center has competition rules. All essays must be submitted by February 9.

Billiard Education Foundation Academic Scholarship — A total of $12,000 in academic scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who have demonstrated academic achievement and have benefited from the game of billiards. One $5,000 Excellence in Education scholarship and seven $1,000 BCA scholarships will be awarded through this national program. To be considered, candidates must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and an SAT of 1050 or ACT of at least 23. Applicants must also complete an original essay. Interested students may go to billiardeducation.com or the Career Center for information. Applications are due by March 15.

Junior Achievement Scholarships — There are several national scholarship award programs for high school seniors who have been actively involved in Junior Achievement. These are the Walt Disney Company Foundation Scholarship, Joe Francomano Scholarship, and Hugh B. Sweeny Achievement Award. The Career Center has basic information packets with all scholarship offerings. Information is also available at ja.org/programs. The deadline to apply for scholarships is February 1.

National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Scholarship — A $2,000 scholarship is offered by the foundation to high school seniors who plan to continue their education in the restaurant and foodservice industries. Applicants must be seniors who are US citizens with a 2.75 minimum GPA with an acceptance to a postsecondary food service program. A minimum of 250 hours of foodservice related work experience is required. Applications are due by April 13. Information is available at nraef.org.

Latino Scholarship — Scholarships provided by the Latino Scholarship Fund are available to college-bound Latino high school seniors from greater Danbury. Applicants must be of Latino heritage and US citizens. Selections will be based on character and integrity, academic standing and/or potential, involvement in and commitment to community, and financial need. The amount of awards will be determined based upon relative need and availability of funds. The Career Center has applications. All applications are due by March 15.

Great Futures Start Here Scholarship — Campus Door will award 100 $1,000 scholarships throughout the 2006-2007 academic year. Entry is open to students who are legal US residents who will be attend an accredited two- or four-year college or trade school as first year students or are students in current attendance. Scholarships will be paid directly to each winner’s college. No purchase is necessary. Void where prohibited. The sweepstakes ends on September 15.
