Route 34 Collision
A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Route 34, Grays Plain Road, and Bennetts Bridge Road about 6:08 pm December 14.
Motorist Kevin Terifay, 36, of 28 Chestnut Hill Road was driving a commercial 1998 GMC Savanna van westward on Route 34, police said.
At that time, motorist Brianna Eckhardt, 17, of 73 Great Ring Road, who was driving a 1997 Dodge Caravan minivan northward on Grays Plain Road, had stopped at a stop sign, police said.
The Dodge then attempted to drive across Route 34, heading toward Bennetts Bridge Road, police said. The two vehicles collided in the intersection, after which they struck some guardrailing.
Ambulance volunteers and Sandy Hook firefighters responded to the scene. Medical evaluations on the two drivers and a passenger determined that there were no injuries, police said.
Police issued Eckhardt an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign. Terifay received an infraction ticket for failure to carry an automotive insurance identification card.
Currituck Crash
Police report an accident involving two sedans near 42 Currituck Road about 10 pm December 13.
Motorist Eliseo Lopez, 60, of Bridgeport was driving southward, as motorist Thomas Holton, 46, of Brookfield was driving northward, police said.
As Lopez was negotiating a curve, he lost control of his sedan, crossed the road and collided with the sedan driven by Holton, police said. Lopezâs sedan then went off the road shoulder and struck an embankment, police said.
There were no injuries. Lopez received an infraction ticket for failure to drive to the right.
Nissan Vs Volkswagen
About 1:06 pm December 14, northbound motorist Abby Hecht, 19, of Wallkill, N.Y., who was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, stopped for traffic conditions near 63 South Main Street, after which northbound motorist Lisa Maier, 49, of Waterbury, who was driving a 1997 Nissan Altima, drove into the rear end of the Volkswagen, police said.
The collision occurred in stop-and-go traffic conditions. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Maier for following too closely.
Truck Vs Truck
A two-truck accident occurred at the intersection of Hawleyville Road and westbound Interstate 84âs Exit 9 off-ramp at about 3:49 pm December 13.
Motorist Anthony Licursi, 71, of Brookfield was driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck northward on Hawleyville Road, police said.
At that time, motorist Richard Michaud, 35, of Beverly, Mass, was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi box truck on the off-ramp.
The Mitsubishi stopped at a stop sign and then started to make a left turn from the ramp onto Hawleyville Road, when it collided head-on with the Chevrolet, police said.
There were no injuries. Michaud received a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.
Bridgeport Man
Police said they observed motorist John Lee, 23, of Bridgeport swerving while driving in the southbound lane of Mount Pleasant Road early on the morning of December 16, so they stopped him on Main Street to investigate.
Lee was charged with failure to drive to the right and with driving with a suspended license. He is scheduled for a January 4 court appearance.
Washington Avenue
About 2 pm December 11, police stopped motorist Richard Lapati, 40, of 10 Johnny Appleseed Drive on Washington Avenue to investigate.
Police charged Lapati with failure to display a front marker plate and with driving with a suspended vehicle registration. Lapati was released for a January 4 court appearance.
Exit 11
State police said that motorist Blake W. Bell of 10 Buck Trail, was driving a 1997 Toyota sedan on the Exit 11 on-ramp of Interstate 84 at about 2:15 pm December 13, when he lost control of the auto on the wet roadway and spun, striking some guardrailing. Bell was not injured. State police said Bell was traveling unreasonably fast.
Copper Theft
Police are investigating a theft from a residential property on Housatonic Drive in the Shady Rest section, in which someone stole a hand truck and a barrel containing 300 pounds of copper parts. Police said they learned of the theft on November 21. The stolen items are valued at more than $500. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police at 426-5841.
Library Incident
Police report that on the afternoon of December 10, witnesses told them that a youth under age 16 caused a disturbance at Booth Library at 25 Main Street.
The youth had shouted, used obscenities and then ran out of the building, police said. Police found and arrested the youth on a charge of breach of peace. The youth was released into the custody of a parent for a court appearance.
The identities of people under age 18 who are charged with crimes are concealed by state law.
Grinch Stolen
Sometime between 6:30 and 9:10 pm on December 12, someone stole an inflatable Grinch lawn decoration, which was positioned at a residence on Totem Trail in the Pootatuck Park section. The item is valued at $100. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the theft to contact them at 426-5841.
Waterfall Plaza
Police report a two-vehicle accident about 8 pm December 16 at 259 South Main Street, in front of Waterfall Plaza, a new shopping center on the site of the former Newtown Manufacturing Company.
Police said southbound motorist Andrew Schmaling, 20, of Monroe, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle, was attempting to make a left turn to enter the plazaâs parking lot, when the Chevrolet collided with a northbound 2003 Ford sedan driven by Heather Guay, 23, of Indian Hill Lane.
There were no injuries. Schmaling received a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Church Hill Road
About 5:17 pm December 13, motorist David Lewis, 17, of 98 Church Hill Road, who was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant westward on a wet Church Hill Road, slowed and attempted to turn right into a gas station driveway at 47 Church Hill Road, when the Mitsubishi was struck from behind by a westbound 1998 Toyota Camry driven by Deborah Stiewing, 57, of 3 Taunton Lake Drive, police said.
There were no injuries. Stiewing was verbally warned for following too closely. Lewis was verbally warned for failure to carry a driverâs license.
