NHS Winter Concert: A Tribute To David Merrill
NHS Winter Concert: A Tribute To David Merrill
On the evening of December 14, the Newtown High School Orchestra honored local artist David Merrill during its Winter Concert. The orchestraâs tribute to Mr Merrill featured a slide show of his work including the murals in town hall, the flag on the trees in Dodgingtown and the box cover of the orchestra fundraiser, Newtownopoly.
Mr Merrill was contacted more than a year ago to support the fundraiser by providing artwork for the game. He accepted the challenge and provided the Labor Day print that had recently been commissioned. This art piece was perfect for the game, providing the energy of the famous parade.
The artist worked countless hours to support the efforts of the orchestra to raise money for its trip to the International Music Program in Italy last April. The orchestra collected more than $30,000 to produce, presell, and sell two-thirds of the 1,000 games printed.
The limited-edition, collectorâs item has successfully made more than $7,000 in profit to date. The orchestra recently went to New York City to hear the New York Philharmonic play. This trip was funded in part by proceeds from the game. The musicians attending Western Regional and State competitions in spring 2007 will also receive funds from these sales.
The Winter Concert was a night filled with beautiful music from the orchestra, band, and chorus. Many traditional Christmas songs were played to sweeten the holiday spirit of adults and children alike.Â
During the slide presentation, the Newtown schoolsâ Music Director Michelle Hiscavich addressed Mr Merrillâs contributions. Not only did he provide the artwork for the game, but also he worked tirelessly to promote sales. His hard work and dedication helped make this such a successful fundraiser. During the slide show, the orchestra played âYouâre A Grand Old Flagâ to honor and thank Mr Merrill whose works are infused with patriotic symbols.
Newtownopoly games are available for the holiday season. They can be wrapped and ready to go for gift giving or for a big stocking stuffer. Games can be purchased at the Toy Tree, Little Green Barn, Lexington Gardens, Dr Henry Gellertâs, office and Andreaâs Bakery for $25 each.
On Saturday, December 23, David Merrill will be at Lexington Gardens from noon until 2 pm to sign games people purchase.
