NHS Student To Compete In National Award Program

Brian Pennarola, a senior at Newtown High School, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal’s Leadership Award (PLA) scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Herff Jones Inc funds the PLA program.

Arlene Gottesman, principal of Newtown High School, announced the nomination, which places Brian in the national competition. One hundred national PLA winners will be chosen in the spring to receive $1,000 college scholarships.

“Brian is an outstanding student who has accrued many awards and honors for his hard work and determination in his pursuit of academic excellence,” stated Ms Gottesman.

High school principals from across the country were able to nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. They were also required to write an essay.

“Every year, the nominees for the Principal’s Leadership Award are just phenomenal, and Brian is no different,” said Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director, NASSP. “He is an excellent example of what a true student leader embodies.”

By recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum. While at NHS, Brian has been president of the National Honor Society, a Junior State Member, won the Rensselaer Medal and Brown Book Award. All of these things are the makings of a well-rounded student. Next fall, he plans to attend Harvard or Tufts to study pre-medicine.

NASSP, the preeminent school leadership organization, serves as the national voice for middle level and high school principals, assistant principals, and aspiring school leaders. NASSP promotes the intellectual growth, academic achievement, character development, leadership development, and physical well-being of youth through its programs and student leadership services. NASSP administers the National Honor Society, the National Junior Honor Society, and the National Association of Student Councils.
