Maura Keenan canned 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Newtown Phone Book topped Alpine Realty, 49-43 in Womenâs Basketball League action at The Gym at Newtown.

Denise Passano, Alex Heron and Rachel McGrath combined for 16 points. For Alpine, Tori Anderton scored 21 points while Sarah Gersky added 15 more with 10 rebounds. Kelly Fengler and Sherri Baggett combined for seven points.

Ken Kelly poured in 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as Newtown Mobil topped The Gym, 67-45. Lynn Yeager added 17 points and Amy McKenna chipped in 10 points and 11 rebounds. Amy Proulx contributed eight points and seven assists. Jen Thomas led The Gym with 23 points while Carolyn Schrieber contributed 12 points and Jaime Murphy chipped in eight.

Jen Zdiarski and Jen Knapp popped in 17 points apiece as Walsh Logging trimmed Newtown Performance, 57-56. Knapp had four key free throws at the end of the game to seal the lead as Zdiarski canned a trio of three-pointers. Tracy Paella had a strong game with 15 points and Joanne Duncanson added eight points and 10 rebounds. For Newtown Performance, Katie Abromovitch poured in 28 points with three three-pointers while Jody Rajcula added 18 points. Jen Timpanelli and Laura Cook combined for 10 points.

In recent action â

McKenna scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Newtown Mobil defeated Newtown Performance, 68-55. Yaeger added 14 points while Proulx dropped in 11 and Kelly Pinckney added four. For Newtown Performance, Abromovitch canned 25 points while Jess Minotti added 13 points. Cook and Rajcula combined 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Colleen Ruiz scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Newtown Phone Book defeated Walsh Logging, 44-32. Karen Powell canned eight points as Keenan dropped in six. For Walsh Logging, Duncanson and Paella combined for 21 points and 18 rebounds as Knapp added seven points and six boards.

Anderton and Shelby Neveriski combined for 37 points as Fengler and Gersky combined for 26 points and a whopping 30 rebounds to lead Alpine Realty past The Gym at Newtown, 63-55. For The Gym, Mel Darrah scored 22 as Thomas added 17 points with a league-high 26 rebounds. Schreiber and Janet Duffy combined for 16 points.

How do you propose tapping the brakes, Dave? 8-30g already trumps any local regulations- you don't have a brake pedal to push. Brookfield, Trumbull and now Ridgefield have a clear case for a moratorium based on the development (thanks to 8-30g) that has already occurred. I don't see a clear case for Newtown to request a moratorium... yet.

Backs Moratorium On Dense Development Applications

Nobody is suggesting shutting the doors on new neighbors. What neighboring towns are doing, and what we should be doing too, is to tap the brakes on all of the multi-family residential development proposals so that we can spend 6 months updating our regulations such that if you want to build dense residential housing here, XX percent of it needs to be affordable (we will never make any headway on increasing our percentage of affordable housing otherwise, short of 8-30g), and the rest needs to be done in as low an impact manner as possible. Low impact on traffic, health & safety, the environment and on the cost of town services.

Ned, please familarize yourself with 8-30G, and then please share the unique flaws that may be helpful in formulating a denial An 8-30g project can be denied only on very narrow grounds – i.e., if it presents health, safety or other concerns that exceed a town’s need for affordable housing. According to the TOG website, “projects cannot be rejected for incompatibility with a Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD); density; traffic congestion; height; aesthetics; concerns of neighbors or the community; and failure to comply with local zoning regulations.” 8-30g proposals are rarely denied by planning and zoning officials because the burden of proof on appeal is on the town. Appeals are costly, but a municipality can be successful in a court case if it has sufficiently established that the concerns leading to denial are factual and substantive.
