Library Incident

Police report that on the afternoon of December 10, witnesses told them that a youth under age 16 caused a disturbance at Booth Library at 25 Main Street.

The youth had shouted, used obscenities and then ran out of the building, police said. Police found and arrested the youth on a charge of breach of peace. The youth was released into the custody of a parent for a court appearance.

The identities of people under age 18 who are charged with crimes are concealed by state law.

Grinch Stolen

Sometime between 6:30 and 9:10 pm on December 12, someone stole an inflatable Grinch lawn decoration, which was positioned at a residence on Totem Trail in the Pootatuck Park section. The item is valued at $100. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the theft to contact them at 426-5841.

Waterfall Plaza

Police report a two-vehicle accident about 8 pm December 16 at 259 South Main Street, in front of Waterfall Plaza, a new shopping center on the site of the former Newtown Manufacturing Company.

Police said southbound motorist Andrew Schmaling, 20, of Monroe, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle, was attempting to make a left turn to enter the plaza’s parking lot, when the Chevrolet collided with a northbound 2003 Ford sedan driven by Heather Guay, 23, of Indian Hill Lane.

There were no injuries. Schmaling received a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Church Hill Road

About 5:17 pm December 13, motorist David Lewis, 17, of 98 Church Hill Road, who was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant westward on a wet Church Hill Road, slowed and attempted to turn right into a gas station driveway at 47 Church Hill Road, when the Mitsubishi was struck from behind by a westbound 1998 Toyota Camry driven by Deborah Stiewing, 57, of 3 Taunton Lake Drive, police said.

There were no injuries. Stiewing was verbally warned for following too closely. Lewis was verbally warned for failure to carry a driver’s license.
