The Newtown Fund On Depot Day
As it has for more than 40 years, The Newtown Fund last weekend organized a group of volunteers in a project designed to ensure that no Newtowners are without a holiday celebration this season.
The Newtown Fund, in cooperation with the town social services department, staged Depot Day on Saturday, December 16, at Sandy Hook School. Depot Day is the culmination of the fundâs Holiday Basket program
On Depot Day, donated gifts, food items, and gift cards are brought by volunteers to the school, where other volunteers wrap the items and organize them, before they are delivered by other volunteers to needy families across town.
This year, 79 local families received donations through the program.
Local organizations provided volunteers for the delivery project, according to Doreen Kostecki, president of The Newtown Fund.
Among those volunteering were staff and students from local schools, church groups, Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, businesses, individuals, and families.
Tax-deductible contributions may be made to the Newtown Fund, Inc, PO Box 641, Newtown CT 06470-0641.
