For A Christmas Eve Warm-Up, Santa Trades A Sleigh For Skis Along Lake Zoar

By Kendra Bobowick

Last Sunday Lake Zoar residents caught an early glimpse of Old Saint Nicholas(es) as a group of jolly old water-skiers carved a wake across the water.

“They put on quite a show,” said resident Peggy Fillion, who lives just a few doors down from Jayne and Donald Sharpe who live along Underhill Road that borders the water. The Sharpes had hosted a holiday get-together on December 17 and amid coffee and breakfast a handful of friends donned their Santa suits as they have done since the 1980s. Moments later saw a flock of red suits skimming along behind a speedboat during the annual Santa Claus Run.

The Sharpes hosted the holiday breakfast as Ms Sharpe explained, “They need somewhere to get into their suits.” Apparently, the process is complicated and it takes nearly an hour to get the suits and hats in place. The results could be only momentary, however. Once they fall in the water, the suits are soaked, said Ms Sharpe.

Without the help of elves or reindeer, Ms Sharpe conveyed via email a few details about Santa on Lake Zoar.

The Santa Claus Run has been a tradition along Lake Zoar since the 1980s and many original skiers still participate.

Ed Lundblad, 50, and Doug Harpell, 53, are part of the founding crew. Kim Sharpe, 37, Jane and Donald Sharpe’s daughter, was the original mascot, but was out of town this year. This year’s count tallied one boat and seven skiers.

With wetsuits beneath their Santa suits the Santas secure hats and wigs with adhesives. For roughly an hour the skiers enjoyed the unusually warm December weather with temperatures in the low 50s this year. They took turns at slalom and trick skiing, and even barefoot skiing. Neighbors look for the skiers annually and come outdoors to ring bells and cheer. The event is always held the Sunday before Christmas.
