Literacy Courses Begin January 7
Literacy Courses Begin January 7
DANBURY â Literacy Volunteers of America-Danbury, Inc is now registering new and returning students for Advanced English and Academic Studies courses given at its 248 Main Street office for classes set to begin on January 7. Advanced English is a course in precollege level English, consisting of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills development, as well as accent reduction and study skills. Academic Studies courses consist of history, math, and computer courses at the college and precollege levels.
The courses will be taught by area college graduates who are all either native English speakers, or who have successfully taken the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test. TOEFL is used to measure the ability of nonnative English speakers to perform in the American college classroom and/or at the professional level. It is often a prerequisite to professional licensing or acceptance as a foreign student in American universities.
âWe are able to offer these courses,â said LVA Director Tom Pinkham, âbecause we have so many well-qualified instructors who are donating their time. There is a real need for courses such as these in Danbury, because there are many well-qualified students whose native language is not English. To succeed in this community they need more than âsurvival English.â Our graduates go on to study at universities and work at major corporations.â
Advanced English and other high school and college prep courses are available Monday through Friday in both day and evening sessions.
Literacy Volunteers of America-Danbury, Inc also offers basic and intermediate Conversational English classes both day and evenings session. Literacy Volunteers-Danbury has been serving the literacy needs of the Danbury area community since 1978.
