Churches For Jubilee Year

The Most Reverend Edward M. Egan, Bishop of Bridgeport, has named five churches in the diocese of Bridgeport as pilgrimage destinations for the Jubilee Year 2000, a Holy Year of the Roman Catholic church.

The five churches are Saint Augustine Cathedral, Bridgeport; Saint Theresa Church, Trumbull; Saint Mary Church, Norwalk; Saint John the Evangelist Church, Stamford; and Saint Peter Church, Danbury. Each church represents one of the five Vicariates, or groupings of parishes, in the Diocese of Bridgeport, which covers all of Fairfield County. Additionally, they are among the oldest of the 88 parishes in the Diocese, and are easily accessible to the 360,000 Catholics who live in Fairfield County.

The Jubilee Year will begin on Christmas Eve, when Pope John Paul II opens the Holy Door in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Catholics who are unable to travel in 2000 to Rome or to the Holy Land have been encouraged by Pope John Paul II to make a pilgrimage to a designated Holy Year Church during the Jubilee Year. By doing so, pilgrims may obtain a special Jubilee indulgence connected to the forgiveness of their sins.
