Located directly in the heart of the Borough of Newtown, Marygold’s On Main is a familiar location for many residents. Co-owned by Kate and Clark Neugold, the location re-opened in January 2021.

Clark Neugold shared that the historical location was a “huge factor” in his interest in opening a restaurant at the site of the former Newtown Inn and that he has great respect for “what this building has meant for the town over so many years.”

“It’s been everything,” he said. “It’s always been a gathering place for the people of the town here, and that’s something that we wanted to honor when we reopened it. We wanted to make sure it still had that event space and still had the gatherings for all occasions, happy or sad.”

In the tradition of being a common gathering place for Newtown residents, Marygold’s offers its venue for family events such as baptisms, weddings, bridal showers, and funerals, as well as school events such as fundraisers and sports banquets and all-day corporate retreats.

The core of the building dates to 1820. It was the home for at least three generations of the Booth and then Hawley family. After the death of Newtown Benefactress Mary Elizabeth Hawley in 1930, the building began its new life as a series of restaurants. Generations of travelers, visitors and residents have enjoyed myriad dining establishments including The Hawley Manor, Hawley Manor Inn, and most recently The Inn at Newtown.

“It’s been here forever, and it’s been part of the town for so long that it’s an honor for us to be able to continue those traditions and be a part of this community,” Neugold related.

Acquiring the building in 2020, the Neugolds implemented their own personal vision of a “blue and gold restaurant,” coinciding quite well with the town’s official colors.

With her background in graphic design and gallery curation, Kate Neugold also contributes a personal touch to the artwork selected for display on walls throughout the restaurant, including several pieces by local artists.

The majority of the work is for sale to anyone interested, according to Clark.

The taproom upstairs features a “beautiful mahogany bar stocked with all the finest things you could imagine,” said Neugold, “We have the most amazing team back there creating these super craft cocktails and mocktails as well as a thoughtful wine list and beer selection.”

“I’m driving the menu right now with our sous chef Tony,” he added. “The menu is changing seasonally with a focus on reimagined classics that are approachable but fun.”

Clark described his culinary vision for Marygold’s as “modern classic,” with an emphasis on staples such as homemade pastas, well sourced meat and produce, with lots of room for creativity.

Saturday is Prime Rib Night, where guests can enjoy this timely classic with a rotating selection of sides and salads.

“It’s a great family environment,” he concluded. “It’s the center of town gathering place for people to come and bring their friends and family, any night of the week. We’ve worked hard to make Marygold’s approachable and family friendly, and we take as much pride in our kids’ food as we do the rest of the menu. I feed my three kids here all the time and we take care of anyone who walks in the door like family.”

The venue consists of a taproom (50 people with bar seats), Gladiolus room (90 people), and two back rooms, the Lilac and the Orchid, for private functions.

“They can all be combined for large events,” Neugold added. “We often do weddings of up to 130 people.”
