RIDGEFIELD — The Marvelous Wonderettes were utterly marvelous indeed in their opening night performance last weekend at Ridgefield Theater Barn.

Director Foster Evans Reese has been blessed with fabulous talent that has imbued this production with a gleeful sense of fun. It is a joy to watch.

The simple set is well-designed by Joane Gorenstein for both the first and second acts. A four-person high school girl band sings its way through the trials, tribulations, and friendships at their high school prom for the first act.

Ten years later, they are together again, revealing the way life is turning out for each of them through song.

This is all very funny. Offering up lots of well-known songs from the sixties and seventies, this is a chair dancing opportunity like few others. Lots of swaying and toe tapping was witnessed.

The four girls are oh so different and yet so very close — most of the time. Missy, a bespectacled redhead with a crush on a beloved teacher, is played by Rena Cavigan. The sultry boyfriend-napper Cindy Lou is played by Sara Giggar.

Taking no nonsense is Betty Jean, portrayed by Tarah Margaret Vega. Rounding out the outstanding gaggle is the boyfriend-smitten Suzy, played by Lauren Nicole Sherwood.

Together this sisterhood loves, fights, and supports each other with musical magic. Every single cast member is superb. Their vocal skills are on glorious display throughout the multitude of musical numbers. The production is nothing but fun in the hands of these energetic and talented women.

Director Reese has deftly rendered a show wherein all appears completely spontaneous and genuine, not a small feat for a musical. Musical direction by Benjamin McCormack was perfection. The sound is totally tailored to the space and the voices it accompanies.

An onstage band featuring Nathan Huvard, Sabrina Mason, Jordan Tully, and Kyle Camarato perform as beautifully as the members blended into the atmosphere on stage.

The opening night performance was met with resounding, well-deserved applause. Do catch The Marvelous Wonderettes. It will put a smile on your face that will last for days.

Due to an unforeseen emergency, opening weekend of The Marvelous Wonderettes was postponed one weekend. As a result, performances will now continue until January 4.

Curtain is Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, and Sunday, December 22, at 2 pm.

Seating is cabaret style; ticket holders are welcome to bring their own food and drink, or purchase from the theater’s concession. Doors open one hour prior to curtain.

Tickets are $33-$38 and available at ridgefieldtheaterbarn.org/tickets or by calling the box office at 203-431-9850. The theater is at 31 Halpin Lane in Ridgefield.

Clockwise from the top are the four marvelous women living up the name of the production they are currently co-starring in at Ridgefield Theater Barn: Tarah Margaret Vega (Betty Jean), Rena Gavigan (Missy), Lauren Nicole Sherwood (Suzy) and Sarah Giggar (Cindy Lou). —Paulette Layton photo
