Slug: Christies’ Dec. 7 Auction Proves Market For Popular Collectibles Remains Strong

NEW YORK CITY — Christie’s Rock and Roll and Entertainment Memorabilia auction, conducted on December 17, sold 302 of the 365 lots offered, grossing $2,173,759. “The results of this auction prove that the market for popular culture collectibles remains strong,” according to Darren Julien, CEO and president of Julien’s.

The top lot was a 1964 Gibson SG standard guitar, owned and played by George Harrison, that sold for $567,500. The next lot was an Academy Award for Best Picture of How Green Was My Valley, 1941, that brought $95,600. A  John Lennon “Imagine” acetate with handwritten notes, 1971, brought $71,700; John Lennon interview tapes, never before heard, 1975, sold for $53,775; and a vintage suit owned and worn by Paul McCartney sold for $53,775.

Other memorabilia that sold include: one sheet from The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, 1919, bringing $65,725; Elvis Presley’s leather stage pants, circa 1970s, brought $35,850; a Gibson SG owned and played by Jerry Garcia, circa 1967, sold for $41,825; Bob Dylan’s signature and handwritten lyrics on an album cover, 1968, brought $33,460 and John Lennon’s Grammy Award for “Michelle,” 1965, sold for $35,850.
