TG

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — NurtureArt Non-Profit, Inc, presents “Cracker: re-thinking the American South,” a group exhibition of contemporary art curated by Kathleen Brady, opening Friday, January 7, and running through February 13. This exhibition will run simultaneously at Naked Duck Gallery and explores the contemporary American South through paintings, sculpture, works on paper and video art by examining the issues of race, history, memory, place and spirituality.

Photographers Cary Clifford, Richard McCabe, Barbara Edwards and Lisa Ramsay follow in the tradition of William Eggleston and Walker Evans by focusing their lenses on the rapidly diminishing Southern landscape and its colorful inhabitants, preserving particular moments in time and traditions soon to be forgotten.

Brantner DeAtley and Travis Lindquist create paintings and sculptural figures that expose the underbelly of prominent Southern institutions such as race, religion and Southern hospitality

Katherine Daniels pays tribute to her family and the quilting tradition of her Appalachia upbringing. Her abstract creations fill the canvas with beading, crocheting and paint, a visual vocabulary that highlights the artist’s love of her native West Virginia and her understanding of the contemporary aesthetic. Artist Amy Talluto recalls her childhood in New Orleans through her paintings of watermelons and oysters and childhood also serves as the catalyst for Milton Carter’s Blue Bus screen print series.

An opening reception will be held Friday, January 7, from 6 to 9 pm at the NurtureArt Gallery, 475 Keap Street, and from 8 to 10 pm at Naked Duck Gallery, 66 Jackson Street in Williamsburg. For information, 718-782-7755 or www.nurtureart.org.
