For Christmas And New Year’s

HARTFORD — Connecticut Public Radio has added three new shows to its holiday programming lineup. The new shows include the U.S. Coast Guard Band’s “Christmas Around the Globe,” “The Capitol Steps’ New Year’s Radio Show” and the classic “New Year’s Day From Vienna.”

“Christmas Around the Globe,” a Connecticut Public Radio production, will air on Friday, December 22, at 9 pm, and again on Sunday, December 24, at 4 pm. The performance was recorded at Leamy Hall in New London.

Commander Lewis J. Buckley leads the US Coast Guard Band in Prokofiev’s “Troika” from Lieutenant Kije, Respighi’s The Adoration of Magi, Leroy Anderson’s Christmas Festival, and other selections. Connecticut Public Radio afternoon music announcer Bill Henry will host the holiday broadcast.

“The Capitol Steps’ New Year’s Radio Show” will air on Saturday, December 30, at 8 pm. The Capitol Steps have an uncanny way of ringing in the new year. This year’s program will feature the comedy troupe in rare form with a look at the election process and celebrating 2001 with its outrageous brand of political humor.

On Monday, January 1, Connecticut Public Radio will once again broadcast the popular musical presentation “New Year’s Day from Vienna,” an American broadcast of joyous Strauss family waltzes, polkas and marches.

It features Vienna’s traditional musical celebration of the New Year, recorded just hours earlier from a performance at the Golden Hall of The Musikverein. This year’s performance, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, will air from 11 am to 1:30 pm.

Connecticut Public Radio can be heard at 90.5 FM (WPKT, Hartford/New Haven), 89.1 FM (WNPR, Norwich/New London), 88.5 FM (WEDW, Stamford/Greenwich) and 99.5 FM (W258AC, Storrs/Mansfield).
