To the Editor:

I’ve lived on Main Street nearly my whole life, I can say it is a tight knit neighborhood.

So, the events of last Friday afternoon were that much more shocking. My mom took our dog, Coby, for his afternoon walk. While crossing from Newtown Savings Bank to the General Store a car sped into the driveway and struck Coby. He was on a leash, on the sidewalk, with my mom just feet behind him holding on.

Coby was a real angel, a twelve-year-old Golden Retriever who still chased tennis balls with ferocity and loved lounging on his porch watching the comings and goings of people at the library. He died shortly after at the emergency vet with his family surrounding him.

I write to say Main Street may be how you commute to work, simply a road to get through.

But for us who live here it is our neighborhood. It’s where we live, garden, entertain and walk our dogs.

Main Street is the whole town’s neighborhood on Labor Day, Halloween, the holidays, but for us residents it is our neighborhood every day. Imagine this happening to your dog on your street.

If Coby’s death could do something about the traffic nightmare often found on Main Street, it would be a wonderful memorial to him, the gentle guardian of Main Street stationed on his porch. And if you hit a dog, please give your name.

The person who took Coby’s life couldn’t even do that.
