Full Cupboards, Full Heart
To the Editor:
My family was not rich, but strength and love do not require dollar signs. Those values are what I hold most dear.
Sometimes we all need reminding â simple things make life simpler to live.
Iâm a single mother of two, ages 8 and 11. I have been a widow for three years.
We moved into my parents house after my husband died. Ten months later, their home caught fire. Family, neighbors, friends, Women Involved in Newtown, the Red Cross, all came to our aid with clothing, monetary donations, and especially kindness.
After reconstruction, we moved back in. I wanted to take some of the burden off my parents, and I went to FAITH food panty. There are not enough words to describe the gratitude I have for the men and women who keep âfaithâ alive by giving their time and smiles to all of us each month. It never fails to overwhelm me that my cupboards are full and so is my heart.
I have worked hard to regain my financial status. The children and I will move into an apartment big enough for three, just in time for Christmas. But, extra money for the holidays? Where could I get that?
Newtown Social Services, thatâs where.
Every year a family in Newtown adopts a family and they give their time and make âbasketsâ for families who need an extra hand. My children and I filled out the list together, as they have gone to the pantry with me so they can understand what it is other people do for us.
On December 13 the âbasketsâ arrived while I was at work. I am not exaggerating when I tell you I literally could not get to the doorway of my apartment without stepping around all the gifts that were left for us. The children received everything they asked for and more. Unbelievable. It was hard for me to take it all in.
The next day the Womenâs Auxiliary at the VFW had a party complete with Santa, and my children, among others, received a gift there, too. I have come to know many people at the VFW this year, and their kindness has a special place in my heart.
This letter is for all the people who have helped me and my family during these last three years. Their hearts are bigger than their wallets, their kindness is most appreciated.
In a sometimes cold and impersonal world, they have shown me that there is hope. Not only during the holidays, but throughout the year, too.
From my family and myself, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
Happy Holidays,
Carol LaFreniere
