CT DEP Receives Award For Recruiting DVD

HARTFORD — The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has won an international award for a video it produced to help recruit a more diverse workforce and promote a broader interest in environmental issues across the state.

The DVD What is the DEP? received a gold Ava Award in an international competition. The Ava Awards recognize outstanding work by creative professionals involved in the planning, writing, shooting, and editing of audio/visual materials and programs.

The video was produced in cooperation with Middlesex Community College’s Corporate Media Services, in Middletown.

DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy said the DVD helps her agency reach out to students all over Connecticut, and provides them with accurate up-to-date information about environmental careers.

“Protecting Connecticut’s environment is an important aspect to the welfare of Connecticut and this DVD brings the point home in a simple to understand format while recognizing the devotion and passion of its employees,” she said. “Our ultimate goal is to encourage young people from all walks of life to consider an environmental career for their own futures.”

What is the DEP? takes the viewer along with DEP employees as they band eagles, take water samples from Long Island Sound, inspect gasoline storage tanks, patrol state parks, and perform other interesting job activities. Also featured are students from Connecticut schools, elementary to college-age, who share how they are helping to protect the environment.

The video highlights environmental stewardship and encourages the interested viewer to consider employment with the DEP.

Entries in the competition include film, analog and digital productions from a wide variety of mediums, from movie screens to televisions to computers. Entrants include video and film production companies, web developers, advertising agencies, and others.

The Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) administers the program.

The mission of the Ava Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the creativity, hard work, and generosity of audio/visual professionals.
