CHARLOTTE, MICH. â Stantonâs Auctioneers of Vermontville, Mich., featured antique phonographs and music machines at its annual auction event including numerous rare items on the Eaton County Fairgrounds in Charlotte on November 16â17. The entire event took nearly 16 hours to complete.
The on-floor buyers in attendance came from across the United States and Canada. Other interest came from parties around the United States and internationally who placed presale, e-mail and phone bids.
Consignments came from estates and collections all over Michigan, including the second portion of the David Feintuch estate, a private collection from the East Coast, a Vogue record collection from the Copeland Estate in Iowa (as well as a collection of machines from Iowa).
Leading the sale was a rare Edison Triumph cylinder phonograph in a mahogany cabinet that had the nickel plated option that when ordered in 1902â1904 was an additional cost of $25 to the machine purchaser. This phonograph achieved $10,600.
A Kalamazoo Duplex double horn disc machine made in Michigan sold for $4,000 and an original booklet promoting it brought $1,000 by itself and went home with a buyer from California.
Other highlights include two Victor IVs with mahogany wooden horns that brought $2,250 and $2,800, a Thornwood (Stella box made for Montgomery Ward) 15¾-inch disc music box at $2,000 and a Victor MS disc machine at $2,500.
Phonographs performed well, including an Edison Home Banner mahogany cylinder phonograph for $2,750, a Zon-o-phone Home disc phonograph at $2,300, a Berliner Trademark Model A disc phonograph, $2,250, and a Victor P2 disc phonograph, $2,000.
