Parent Programs

WELCOME TO THE TEEN ZONE, for parents of middle and high school students, will begin on Thursday, January 18. Perfect for parents trying to understand the ups and downs, ins and outs, and doâs and donâts of parenting a teen or almost teen. This is a five-week session and the fee is $25 per person or $35 per couple, which includes all material.

POSITIVE PARENTING FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS is a new course for parents. This course will now run Mondays, 9 am. Dates for the New Year are January 8, 22, February 5, 26, March 5, 19, April 2, 23, 30, May 14, and June 4. The fee is $25 per person or $35 per couple. This includes all materials and applies for the whole year, as this is an on-going program. All are welcome at any time.

It is necessary to pre-register for all parenting courses.

FATHERâS NIGHT â Please note change of date Â kicks off the New Year on Monday, January 22, at 7:30.

4-H Clubs â On-Going

Fourth and fifth grades continue to meet on Monday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:30. Middle School grades meet on Wednesdays from 4 to 5:15. Both groups will meet at NYS. Membership is free but space is limited. For additional information or to register, please call the office.

Youth Group Meetings

The High School Youth Advisory Board (YAB); Middle School Youth Advisory Board (MS YAB); and NYCAAP will all meet again in January, 2001! Please watch this column for meeting dates and times.

Membership in the above groups is free and new members are welcome at all times. For additional info please call the NYS office.

Super Sitters

Due to the popularity of this program, another session will be added. Those dates will be Mondays, April 23, 30, and May 7, 14, and 21. The fee is $25 and includes all materials. Snacks are always provided. If interested, please sign up quickly as all other sessions for the year are full.

Nobody is suggesting shutting the doors on new neighbors. What neighboring towns are doing, and what we should be doing too, is to tap the brakes on all of the multi-family residential development proposals so that we can spend 6 months updating our regulations such that if you want to build dense residential housing here, XX percent of it needs to be affordable (we will never make any headway on increasing our percentage of affordable housing otherwise, short of 8-30g), and the rest needs to be done in as low an impact manner as possible. Low impact on traffic, health & safety, the environment and on the cost of town services.

Ned, please familarize yourself with 8-30G, and then please share the unique flaws that may be helpful in formulating a denial An 8-30g project can be denied only on very narrow grounds – i.e., if it presents health, safety or other concerns that exceed a town’s need for affordable housing. According to the TOG website, “projects cannot be rejected for incompatibility with a Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD); density; traffic congestion; height; aesthetics; concerns of neighbors or the community; and failure to comply with local zoning regulations.” 8-30g proposals are rarely denied by planning and zoning officials because the burden of proof on appeal is on the town. Appeals are costly, but a municipality can be successful in a court case if it has sufficiently established that the concerns leading to denial are factual and substantive.

P&Z Should Reject Vessel Proposal

The town should certainly measure its performance against the statewide strategies. Unless I missed it I only know of one small cluster of homes that would meet the affordable housing program. Given the 500 or so new units being added in the last 10 years I think that 4/500 would not meet the metric to allow for a moratorium. I mean, fingers crossed for a Christmas miracle but I suspect we will see a few 8-30's sent our way in a method to avoid the Nimby mob. Thanks, Nimby mob.
